According to the official site the government saved $8 million by outsourcing it to China. This is obscene. Is anyone really going to say that there are not American sculptors, surely some of whom are black, who could not have produced a statue that would actually convey the presence and spirit of the man? Like him or not, King was a great man who stood strong on his faith and commitment to his cause. This statue captures none of that but instead gives us an overdose of shopworn “proletarian realism.” Beneath contempt.

As for the column, nobody can attribute this to King getting his revenge any more than we can to the judgment of God. Yet and still, the author puts it out there: King would be ashamed and angered at what has happened to black people in this country in the last 47 years, from the culture of dependence to the cultural degradation. On that we can all agree.

Who paid for this piece of crap? It isn’t the least bit artistic, just a lump of granite half carved. What’s with the two hunks of granite behind the statue? Really a pathetic display.

I agree, the statue looks angry. In terms of “body language” the crossed-arms pose says to me, “I am closed to all and any others.” It doesn’t look like strength and leadership. It looks like a dictator!
