If there were ever a day to brush up on the lyrics of the Star-Spangled Banner (before performing in front of a huge crowd), the tenth anniversary of 9/11 is probably that day. The thought apparently didn’t flutter through singer Cyndi Lauper‘s head when she was selected to sing our National Anthem for the U.S Open on Sunday.
Time after time, the tune is botched by popular recording artists and Lauper followed suit, replacing the original lyrics “O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming” with “O’er the ramparts we watched as our flag was still streaming.” Yeah, same part Christina Aguilera fumbled at the Super Bowl earlier this year.
Watch the mess:

Editor’s Note: Thank-you to BLAZE reader Thepest for pointing out a minor typo in the first version of this story. It originally said “the Start-Spangled Banner” and has since been corrected.

Sep. 13, 2011 at 12:22amHey, US Open organizers, next time you need someone to sing the National Anthem, call me! Pay my expenses to get there and I’ll do the song for free. I’ll also sing it the way it was written, stay on pitch and up to tempo, interpret the lyrics with genuine patriotism, and I won’t forget the words. Seriously, call me!

Sep. 12, 2011 at 10:46amI think that this is a disgrace to all Americans that they would get someone that cant remember the words to our National Anthem. She could have used a song sheet at least. This really makes me sick that this would happen on such a important day and event

Sep. 12, 2011 at 10:05amI am deeply grieved by this flub. However, I am also heartened every, EVERY time I attend a home Atlanta Braves game at their very patriotic spirit not only with the Anthem, but also with Soldier Sundays, and National Songs sung by VERY talented local people. Thank you Atlanta Braves!!

Sep. 12, 2011 at 9:36amNothing wrong with selecting a throwback artist to sing the anthem. Shes an american as well. For having the courage to sing in front of such a large crowd, I give her a pass. Its not like she was pulling a Rosanne and being disrespectful. Lets stop being petty and have some compassion for our fellow American.

Sep. 11, 2011 at 10:02pmWhile I believe it is disheartening for so many to mess up the lyrics to our national anthem, I must point out to Eddie Scarry that it is equally important to SPELL THE TITLE correctly as well.
The “Start-Spangled Banner”?
Stop depending on the damned spill cheeker and proof read what you write, or at least get someone who can type and spell to do it for you.
I would point out that The Blaze needs to hold to higher standards than the rest of the media, and this is far from the first time I have read erroneous and ridiculously high school-ish errors. It’s bad enough bloggers mess up which makes them look like the idiots they are, but authors and contributors to The Blaze should show a bit more professionalism before posting anything.
After all, imagine how many times controversy has reared up and blasted the founders for a missing comma. Language is important, and using it properly is equally as important, for save a few letters or grammar errors, our whole system would be worthless without attention to the details.
imagine this line from the Declaration of independence spelled improperly:
The story of the present King of Great Britain is a story of repealed injuries and usurpations, all halving indirect object the establishment of an resolute Tyranny over these States.

Sep. 12, 2011 at 9:56amI would like to point out that ThePest spelled “spell checker” wrong. “Stop depending on the damned spill cheeker and proof read what you write.” I think ThePest should stop depending on his damned Mozilla web browser’s spell check and hold his online commenting to a higher standard.
