Before the Fox News/Wall Street Journal Republican presidential debate on Monday, there was concern among its producers on how to handle questioning of Mitt Romney.
Bret Baier, anchor of Fox News’ “Special Report,” intended to ask Romney about the endorsement he received earlier in the day from Jon Huntsman.
“Governor Huntsman endorsed you today, but in New Hampshire seven days ago he called you a perfectly lubricated weather vane on the important issues of the day. He said you’ve been on three sides of every issue. And just last week he charged that it’s hard to find your core,” Baier recited the question before the debate to his boss, Michael Clemente, according to the New York Times. Clemente approve the question but wanted Baier to “leave out the ‘three sides’ part.“ It was ”too much.”
Baier did ask the question during the debate and the “three sides part” was in fact left out.
In another instance, Juan Williams, who also moderated the debate, asked Romney a question about his stance on immigration. It was a question that had initially been nixed by higher-ups for sounding too politically charged.
And while prepping for the debate Gerald F. Seib, Washington bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal asked, “Does anyone have the feeling like we’re ganging up on Romney?” Williams replied, “no.”

Posted on January 19, 2012 at 1:01amThe whole Juan Williams question was a setup. All a candidate has to know in a debate is that a question about a particular issue is coming up. Then he bones up on that particular issue from every angle that a question can be asked, then when the question comes he has the perfect answer for the way that particular crowd is leaning politically. The host that has the show after Hannity from TX was talking with one of the guys that helped put together the questions for the debate, they knew he would run with the answer, but claimed they did not know Gingrich would go so far ? If the folks in the Republican party are loony tunes enough to continue voting for the guy with the worst baggage, poorest character, corrupt, takes money from Freddy Mac/healthcare insurance industry, an ego maniac and a guy that people who served with him won’t even endorse him, some do claim he is not stable enough to be president. Romney is the only guy that has a plausibility of beating Obama. He can carry Independents. We Independents will not vote for an ego driven loser like Gingrich. If the far right nominates him, he will lose the presidency big time, greater than Goldwater in 1964 and take the House down with him.

Posted on January 18, 2012 at 3:23pmWhile Fox usually presents both sides of the story, and I find that they are more “balanced” then 90% of the other media outlets, I found the debate a little disturbing. It appeared that not only Fox, but the commentators and the other canidates on stage, had a pact going to embarass and stump Romney. It seemed that from the first question asked of Romney to the last, it was presented more like an attack, then a true question. It was seen by many as a “gang up on Romney” to make him look undesirable, then a real debate to find out what the canidates would do as president. And it worked. They made Romney look like he was a flip-flopper, defensive and skirting the issues/questions asked. I felt sorry for him in a way. Obama is a master debater, and will seek the same reactions from whomever wins the nomination for the Reps. Its going to be a rough, lefty side of a ride and whomever wins the rights nomination had better be prepared better than Romney was at the debate. As far as the Juan Williams exchange…every question he asked, of any one, was skewed to a racist point of view. He spent more time telling everyone how disrespectful and unfeeling they were towards minorities, then asking REAL questions and accepting the answers. But, Juan is from the left side of things and right now, the flavor of the yr. for the left/Dems is their own prejudicial reverse racism that they tout at any and every opportunity.Unfortunately, many in the US are buying into it. And thats the poin

Posted on January 18, 2012 at 7:49pmLMN; You make excellent points, especially reverse racism delegated to the liberal who Fox saved from NPR. Too bad they also saved champion progressive partner of Hannity. “Balanced” means to them you put the most extreme CSPL leftist at one end of the teeter-totter and give them carte blanche to talk over, yell, fight and offset anyone who is anywhere to their right of the spectrum who is placed closer to the center so there is no possible chance at leverage, to assure it is “FAIR”.
Report Post »Worse yet was presentation on Fox showing the twits from tweeter who were rating who answered questions directly and told the truth. We all know the young, marijuana loaded computer/internet literates favored liberty and occupy types. In addition, like Fox, they know a MA moderate could not speak their language or “truths”

Posted on January 18, 2012 at 1:00pmMore obvious trivia Eddy! All can see Fox bias against Romney. Your point seems to be they recognize the bias and how obvious it is. Therefore, their thoughts about how we can hide it and look like we ask “Fair and Balanced” questions. Never mind Fox, it is known in media and informed circles that Rupert and family oppose Romney, so Book Sales, Wall Street Journal, and Fox News must maintain that position.
Report Post »It is all the same, and part of the attempt by rich old men to buy and/or control our country and worldwide society. They really believe they can outbid Buffett and outdo Karl Marx, Lennin, Stalin, Mussolini, and Hitler.
