Technology Here’s what an Internet blackout looks like

Update 1:53 p.m.: Comments from citizens have been flooding congressional office websites today. So much so, Gizmodo reports, that some Senate sites are actually crashing. Affected websites include Mark Begich (D – AK), Barbara Boxer (D – CA) and Patrick Leahy (D – VT).

So, it may not a complete Internet blackout and some sites are being more vigilant about their protest of the House‘s proposed Stop Online Piracy Act and the Senate’s Protect Intellectual Property Act, but it seems to be the most cohesive protest on the Internet to date.

These two pieces of legislation, many free Internet supporters believe, would lead to online censorship and hamper the entrepreneurial atmosphere on the Internet. Even the White House has spoken out against the legislation.

Here’s what the blackout/protest looks like on participating sites:

Wikipedia will be dark for 24 hours, but see the end of this post to a link for loopholes around the blackout if you simply must do some fact checking with the site today.

    yawn… and yet most of these are in the govs pocket already arent they? I know.. .they talk like they arent but… well you know…

    Besides since I dont use those sights, this is the first time I’ve heard about them doing this… just a PR show if you ask me…

    Wikipedia isn’t really shut down. Just use Google Cache. Craigslist I found a very quick way around lat night Take you city link, for example:

    panamacity.craigslist.org
    and add this to it at the end:

    And there you are.
