Handy-dandy table on Obama’s economic record — suitable for framing

The Senate Republican Policy Committee (full disclosure: I used to work for the RPC) recently put out a nice little table clearly laying out President Obama’s economic record. If you follow this link, you can see the version that contains links to all their research.

ChrisGil17 has put a lot of comments on here quoting talking points from the left, which I honestly don’t have a problem with, but I do have a few questions and comments about the points he/she has made.

“Actually the Unemployment rate in December was the lowest since 2004.”

Unemployment is higher now than it was in January 2009 as noted in the graphic. Where are you getting your numbers?

“You say he is to blame for all this unemployment when fact is he inherited a problem that the Republicans caused.”

I think most would agree the country was on a bad track already when Obama took over. However, shouldn’t that have turned around under Obama if his policies are indeed the correct ones? Having a higher unemployment rate now than when Obama took office doesn’t exactly back up the argument that Obama’s policies are any better than the Republicans.

“He has passed healthcare saving thousands.”

Most people that I talk to tell me that their healthcare rates have gone up since the passing of Obamacare to compensate for the increased coverage required under the new law. I honestly don’t have any personal experience in this because I don’t have health care insurance.

“Helped our Veterans. Helped women get fair and equal pay.”

Do you have actual sources backing up these two statements? They sound good, but where are the facts? Furthermore, I was unaware that women weren’t getting a fair share or equal pay because they do everywhere I have work

You make good arguments but I’d like to point out a couple of things.
      1) Obama inherited the office during the economic downturn, as the economy was getting worse. It hadn’t bottomed out so it’s not like all he had to do was build up the economy. He was first tasked with curbing the recession and stopping it from getting worse.
      2) It takes a while for an economy to recover from a recession. It’s only been 3 years. The depression took about 10 years and a world war to end. These things take time and the policies he implemented aren’t going to patch everything up nice and quick.
      3) Every single one of these statistics are skewed because he took office during the downturn. If you looked at Bush’s record it probably would be very similar. He ended his second term during this recession and I guarentee his chart would look worse than Obama’s chart.
      4) It is not Bush’s fault and it is not Obama’s fault. The blame lies in downright immoral actions by investors in the free market. They played the game, and everyone got hurt.
      5) It may sound like I am supporting Obama but I am not. I disagree with his economic actions of the bailout (although it was a continuation of a proposal that Bush had drafted while in office). The banks should have been left to fail. Although the risk was very high, and I do see some justifications for this action. No action could have led to greater recession.

Bush did the fiscal 2009 budget & he handed Obama a deficit of over a trillion annuals from the start. Health insurance doubled over the last 10 years before Obama passed HCR. Bush added more people to the Food Stamp rolls than Obama did. Europe is on the verge of another recession because they follwoed conservtaitve economic principles, Gas prices spiked under Bush mysteriously went down around the election & went back up to the Bush era levels., etc. Bush was losing 3/4 million jobs a month when he left office & we are now gaining 200,000m a month nearly 1 million a month turnaround.

Boy, you all give the President far more power than he actually has. Most of what is on this graphic is controlled by Congress and not the President alone. Even if I was to believe the majority of the statements (which I don’t), it shows how desperate some people are to pin anything… even their own foibles… on the POTUS. That is what is wrong with this country today. It is far too easy to blame others for their “splinters” when we refuse to remove our own “logs.”

Only thing that is glaringly incorrect is the unemployment figures. It’s really around 20 to 25%.

You are very racist aren’t you. You are exactly what is wrong with America. You and the right wing conservative party is racist and care only about the rich. So I guess the only reason the Republicans would win is because all the rich white people voted for them. I am Spanish, a citizen of the United States. I support Obama because he has done more than any Republican candidate. He has passed healthcare saving thousands. Helped our Veterans. Helped women get fair and equal pay. And much more. The Republicans can’t win because they are to conservative.

Ignorance is bliss. Hating on minorities to make yourself feel superior. It’s people like you that pretty much force me to vote against republicans, with very few exceptions. I’m voting Obama because of you, unless Ron Paul pulls out a huge comeback in which case I’ll consider voting for him.

Wrong. It is high among Republicans that’s because you are angry that your taxes will increase due to all the money you have and because your candidate won’t win. It is a proven fact that even though some Democrat don’t agree with all he did, he is still widely supported among Democrats. he is also widely supported around the world so your rebuttal is?

I am not that pissed off at the President. I am primarily pissed off at the Do-nothings in Congress. The fact that a few loose cannons can hold up legislation because it doesn’t benefit THEIR selfish interests is preposterous at best, and, at its worst, despicable and evil. And there are PLENTY of Republicans, as well as Dems, who fit that bill.

Forgot price of gas? I think not. Perhaps they did forget to qualify Americans’ poorer ability to read?

A more useful parameter than “Unemployed Americans” would be to list the total number of employed. The problem with “unemployed” is it is an opinion. If one quits looking for work one is no longer unemployed.

I went to the original site and most of the research comes from executive branch research (Obummer’s lemmings) and the rest of it from private research groups.

How will the chosen one spin this? Oh yeah, I almost forgot, the Lamestream media will not even touch it so I guess he does not have to!

And you forgot to keep in mind that the president—and politicians generally—have limited control over economic growth. Those indicators (like job numbers or GDP growth) reflect more about the normal ups and downs of the business cycle than any one politician’s economic prowess.

Variables they forgot variables. How many people over 65 have had to go back to work because of the increase of gas and food? Look at the College tuition. People are sucked into going back so they complete the wheel as the Professors get ahead and the student unemployed. Who are those professors again. Much like the health care system it is a wheel of money and death and no-one
comes out on top but the beast that keeps feeding its self. People are sharing homes and not working unemployment has run out and they are steeling but they don’t call themselves unemployed. I’d imagine the jails are full and getting fuller. They have no where to turn to but the government. I think we should give farms to people who are willing to work the same with factories and start buying from ourselves again. I enjoy using a variety of food from other countries now and then, and I am sure some may enjoy ours and if they don’t so be it. Ten years ago I remember people were doing anything to be American Remember that! It is because We are blessed from God and we are to be an example of Goodness to other Countries. That is the God Given Power America Has.
