Mohammad Yaseen, chairman of the Pakistan Telecommunication’s Authority, said the move came after the Pakistani government asked Twitter to block tweets promoting a competition that had users posting depictions of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad to Facebook. Pictures of Muhammad are widely offensive in Islamic culture.
Yaseen said Facebook agreed to address Pakistan’s concerns about the competition, but officials have failed to get Twitter to do the same.
“We have been negotiating with them until last night, but they did not agree to remove the stuff, so we had to block it,” said Yaseen.
That’s too bad; looks like Pakistanis will be missing out on my live tweeting of “The View” today.
