Along with Media Matters MSNBC’s Ed Schultz was a leading critic of Rush Limbaugh when he called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” on his radio program in February. But unlike Media Matters, Schultz said at a recent seminar for radio hosts in New York that going after advertisers to silence people is “the wrong thing to do.”
Schultz told the audience that he called Media Matters founder David Brock earlier in the year and expressed his displeasure with the fact that his group was targeting Limbaugh’s advertisers. Media Matters, a progressive media watchdog group, had demanded that the advertisers drop the right-wing radio host over his controversial comments about Sandra Fluke, the law student.
“I need you to know what’s happening,” Schultz said he told Brock, recounting his conversation. “‘This is what’s happening. There’s a lot of people getting hurt. This is going to too far. It’s my opinion, you can take it for what it’s worth.’”
Contrary to all appearances, Schultz must not carry much weight. Media Matters’ ad boycott of the Limbaugh show is still up and running.
