Barney Frank’s marriage vows are about what you’d expect
America’s first openly gay member of Congress officially became the first gay member of Congress to have a gay wedding over the weekend. Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank, 72, got hitched to his longtime partner Jim Ready, 42. According to the Washington Post, the couple’s 300 closest friends and relatives took over the Boston Marriott Hotel in Newton, Mass., including Nancy Pelosi, John Kerry, Dennis Kucinich and Steny Hoyer.
Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick served as officiant for the 5-minute ceremony. However, Frank did not invite President Obama. In May, Frank told C-SPAN: “I don’t want to be accused of having shut down the entire region for a five-mile radius on a holiday weekend. I don’t want my guests going through a magnetometer… not to my party.”
The couple’s vows were just as unorthodox as the event and included… political puns. How romantic.
Do you promise to love each other and be each other’s best friend,
In sickness and in health,
In Congress or in retirement,
Whether the surf is up or the surf’s flat,
For richer or for poorer,
Under the Democrats or the Republicans,
Whether the slopes are powdery or icy,
Whether the book reviews are good or bad,
For better or for worse,
On MSNBC or on Fox,
For as long as you both shall live?
In addition, guests left with gift bags featuring campaign buttons which read, “Barney and Jim for Congress” — with “Forever” stamped across the word “Congress.” No word on where the lovebirds will honeymoon.
