Things you better know from the first full day of the GOP convention

A roundup of the little things that may have slipped through the cracks…

1. Congressional Candidate Mia Love (R-Utah) set the convention hall ablaze early in the evening: “We’re not better off than we were four years ago. And no rhetoric, bumper sticker or Hollywood campaign ad can change that.”

2. From Ann Romney‘s speech, which was truly electrifying: “We’re too smart to know that there aren’t easy answers but we’re not dumb enough to know that there aren’t better answers.”

Notes from day one of the Republican convention3. CNN’s Erin Burnett when she saw Mitt Romney come on stage after Ann’s speech: “I had a tear in my eye.” (VIDEO)

4. From New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie‘s speech: “Mr. President, real leaders don’t follow polls; real leaders change polls.”

5. Shortly before Christie took the stage to speak, the Drudge Report leaked the transcript.

6. WOMEN– Romney is suffering from a gender gap. A recent poll showed President Obama leads with 54 percent of women. Let’s not get started on Rep. Todd Akin‘s (R-Mo.) contributions to this. Speeches from Ann and Christie both played up the pro-women angle. Christie on his mother: “She spoke the truth bluntly, directly and without much varnish. I am her son,” and “Tonight we are going to do what my mother taught me. Tonight we are going to choose respect over love.” Ann was a little more subtle: “I LOVE YOU WOMENNNNNN!”

7. Actually, one thing on Akin: Earlier in the evening MSNBC’s Chris Matthews said ,”The [Republican] Party will have to defend him” through November, if Akin doesn’t drop out of his Senate race (he has said he will not). This is slightly odd considering any Republican of significance, including Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, has called on Akin to withdraw.

8. Also at MSNBC: After Speaker John Boehner gave his speech in which he said voters should “throw [Obama] out,” The Last Word‘s Lawrence O’Donnell didn’t overreact at all. “There’s an ugly physical imagery to this…,” he said.

9. Meanwhile, over at Current TV, anchorman Al Gore:

You forgot the two highly contested voice votes. Neither were clear, yet the moderators shoved them through. Also, you forgot that someone muted Georgia’s mic when they were announcing the votes for Ron Paul, and a was a voice complementing the good mic control there.

#1 there was part of Ann Romney’s speech, not Mia Love’s… although she was awesome too!
