In June, I wrote about a shocking report that found serious deficits in learning in California’s public education system.  The research of the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) proved that Golden State college grads are paying more for less these days.  Now, ACTA is taking its study nationwide and the results are just as startling.

For example, it might surprise you to know that…

Just 17 percent of college graduates knew Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in Confederacy

Twice as many graduates know Lady Gaga than George Washington as general at the Battle of Yorktown

Less Than 20 percent Identified James Madison as the “Father of the Constitution”

Little more than half understand the Constitution established the separation of powers

57 percent knew John Roberts is the chief justice

So what is the problem?

“Historical amnesia is common because less than 20 percent of schools require even a basic course in American history or government – and only three percent require economics,” notes ACTA spokesman Daniel Burnett.  ”It always comes back to jobs. And this is an issue that worries Americans—70 percent of who said they think core courses in basic subjects should be required.”
