If we go over the fiscal cliff, guess who will get the blame

If you guessed “George W. Bush,” you’re on the right track…

If you guessed “those darn obstructionist Republicans,” you’re getting warmer…

Via WaPo:

A majority of Americans say that if the country goes over the fiscal cliff on Dec. 31, congressional Republicans should bear the brunt of the blame, according to a new Washington Post-Pew Research Center poll, the latest sign that the GOP faces a perilous path on the issue between now and the end of the year.

While 53 percent of those surveyed say the GOP would (and should) lose the fiscal cliff blame game, just 27 percent say President Obama would be deserving of more of the blame. Roughly one in 10 (12 percent) volunteer that both sides would be equally to blame.

This could be some potential bad news for Republicans since 49% of those polled expect the December 31 deadline to pass without a deal, while just 40% have faith that politicians in Washington can agree on something.

Maybe we NEED to go over the cliff — let WH have what it wants. The people need to see what will happen to the country when he gets his way.

The White House doesn’t want to go over the cliff. I think they would accept it rather than accept a version of the Ryan Budget–which Obama ran against so won’t be adopting. The only “positive” for the White House would be that, if we go over the Cliff, taxes would ALL go up to previous rates as was agreed upon. Then, once rates go up across the board, it would be easier to get Republicans (some of them) onboard with just reducing the tax rates on everyone’s first $250,000. The GOP can more easily vote for tax cuts (after they go up automatically) then they could vote for tax cuts AND tax hikes, as the White House is requesting. Then they can campaign and say, honestly, that they ONLY voted for tax cuts.

Other than that, the Fiscal Cliff doesn’t hold anything the White House wants that I can see. It’s pure austerity, tax hikes and spending cuts, including military spending cuts.

What the Republican Congressmen SHOULD do is just pass what the President wants and say, loudly and publicly, that they are doing so. Hang the economy around the President’s neck and let him sink or swim. Because, as it stands now, they are going to get almost all the blame from their digging in their heels.

Chris Christie is the MOST POPULAR Republican in the country right now. Because he’s seen as bipartisan after Sandy. Compromise and bipartisanship is extremely popular with the public (just not the extremists within each party).
