WaPo: GOP ‘demonizing’ welfare recipients with drug tests
From the Washington Post‘s editorial today:
[T]o single out welfare recipients by forcing them to undergo mandatory drug testing as a condition of receiving aid is a way of demonizing them and vilifying public aid itself. …
It would be one thing if GOP lawmakers wanted to require drug testing to ensure that drug-addicted welfare recipients gained access to treatment. But their intent is to disqualify and punish them by knocking them off the rolls of public assistance.
What the Post is saying: If Republicans want to require drug testing of welfare recipients solely because they don’t want people using welfare to buy drugs… that’s not cool, bro.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 2:22pmIt’s ironic that in many cases, the government becomes an ENABLER of bad behavior while at the same time punishing those who are productive and self-sufficient.
The State of California is a prime example. California has 1/8th of the nation’s population yet has 1/3rd of the nation’s recipients of Temporary Aid to Needy Families (TANF) benefits.

The State of California collects taxes to fund its anti-tobacco effots. Yet, the California Legislature refuses to block tobacco and alcohol from EBT card purchases for those receiving taxpayer-provided benefits.

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 1:32pmCall me insensitive, but why do people want something for nothing?!? In order for me to get a job, I MUST past a 9 panel (or higher) drug test. Then, in order to keep my job, I MUST pass random 9-panel (or higher) drug tests.
In order to get $$ from the govt, people should be willing to take & pass a full panel drug test. PERIOD. What’s the big deal? If someone told me they’d give me money, food, housing, free medical, schooling, etc but only if I’d be willing to take random drug tests, u bet your-bottom-dollar I’d do it…. without hesitation & with zero complaints.
WHY IS THIS EVEN AN ISSUE?????? it’s a no brainer to me. It will weed out the users & it may also scare them into getting clean. It’s in no way singling out the recipients… it’s actually making them more on the same level as the rest of society. Why should they get special priveledges for being on welfare?

Posted on December 17, 2012 at 12:29pmYou are so right. I am a nurse and have to take drug test to work. I would be more shamed by taking welfare than having to pee in a cup. No test no check. I resent paying for a lazy asses drugs.
