‘Honey Boo Boo’ stirs more deep thoughts

The Washington Post‘s Kathleen Parker had the deepest political thoughts this week after watching a single episode of TLC’s Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

Andrea Peyser of the New York Post followed suit in her own column:

While you were napping, the apocalypse has come — in the form of a 4-foot, blond, foul-mouthed and hyperactive 7-year-old girl child.

Barbara Walters selected Honey Boo Boo as one of the past year’s “10 Most Fascinating People’’ — alongside Prince Harry and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. The circus freak show drew ratings equal to Bill Clinton’s bravura speech at the Democratic National Convention.

It proves that the current American thirst for deviance, ignorance and the crass exploitation of minors knows no bottom. And that child-welfare authorities are reluctant to intervene when the cameras are rolling.

She may stir deep thoughts in others but I think she is incapable of such things herself….

The elitism expressed in the Post article is breathtaking. Sure it’s easy to laugh and sneer at this family of fat, half-wit rednecks; but what’s obvious to me from the few episodes I’ve seen is that it’s a very loving and remarkably functional family. Which is something that can’t be said about many, if not most, of the celebrity families that elitists love to love. Let’s just forget about that unmitigated disaster that is the Sheen family and instead point and sneer at Honey Boo Boo’s Thompson family and refer to them as the “freak show”.
