Scarborough tells GOP: ‘Get smart,’ ‘celebrate’ Powell as a Republican
Writing in Politico, MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough comments on the recent controversy surrounding former State Secretary Colin Powell.
On Sunday Powell said there’s a “dark vein of intolerance” in today’s GOP and suggested that many party members hold racist tendencies.
From Scarborough’s column:
Republicans could kick General Powell around for the next four years or they could get smart and start celebrating the fact this commanding figure still identifies himself as a Republican. Then they should do everything possible to drag him back into a big GOP tent.
Unfortunately, the Republican Party of 2013 bears little resemblance to the party of Ronald Reagan, who would have responded to Powell’s concerns with an all-hands-on-deck effort to win the war hero back. That’s because President Reagan lived by the belief that “just because I’m your friend 80 percent of the time doesn’t make me your enemy 20 percent of the time.”
If the Republican Party is big enough to reach out to disaffected moderates like Colin Powell, then it is big enough to win the White House back in 2016. The question is whether the GOP will choose to go the way of William F. Buckley or Todd Akin.
The party’s survival depends on that choice.

(Fact: Obama is lazy) And I could probably embrace Powell but I am half mexican so I hate the white part of Powell too. I am also half chinese so I hate the blacks and I am half american indian so I hate russians. What an idiot.

Posted on January 15, 2013 at 2:11pmToo bad the GOP does not have a excommunication ceremony like in the movie Becket. Powell should be formerly kicked out of the Republican Party so the left can stop using him as the ‘model’ republican.

Posted on January 15, 2013 at 2:56pmAbsolutely agree. Why would Colin Powell continue to stay in such a political party as the GOP when it is so obviously full of such dark and deep veined racism? Doesn’t that make him a dark veined racist for being in a party of dark veined racists? This guy doesn’t know his you know what from a hole in the ground. Why is he still in the GOP? Why doesn’t he just go join the Democrats. You know he wants to. It’s obvious. Then he can point his finger at the entire GOP from his sanctimonious DNC perch in which there is absolutely no hatred or racism toward anything “white.”

Posted on January 15, 2013 at 1:40pmRegarding Powell, WHY should the Republicans celebrate “the fact this commanding figure still identifies himself as a Republican”??? Why. This is a man who did not vote for the Republican last time around. He, Colin Powell, voted for Obama. He voted for him again ths last election, too. Now, Powell takes the position that the Republican party has “racist elements” – oh for God’s sake – give me a break! NOW the Republicans are supposed to tell Powell – Hey there, Colin – COME ON IN! It doesn’t matter that what we hear from you is what you believe? It doesn’t matter that you’re so “moderate” you sound more and more like a DEMOCRAT. Yeah – right – you don’t want us to believe our lying ears. Colin Powell-baby should just re-register as what he REALLY is – a DEMOCRAT. He is a Democrat. He will always BE a Democrat. So just MAN UP, and say who he really is. This other stuff he’s trying to sell to us is PURE CRAP.

Posted on January 15, 2013 at 7:08pmIt’s also absolutely clear that the oath he took as a member of the military, and officer and a political figure means nothing to him. For this, he is a shamed man, barely worthy of being called a man.

Posted on January 15, 2013 at 1:32pmWin him back you say! Before that effort I would Ask the General, what in Republicanism does he find so appealing that he would self-identify as a Republican. Personally I think he just says that because the Last Three Republican Presidents pushed his Career along. It’s not because he resonates with the principals of Republicanism it’s just that he benefited from Republican Presidents.

Posted on January 15, 2013 at 1:23pmYeah especially since its the Democrats and liberals that tend to be the freaking racists. They are the ones that immediately point out 1) race 2) sex 3) sexual orientation etc. But us conservatives are the racists. Lets just get this civil war going and get the dang thing over with eh?
