A somewhat unexpected editorial today from the Los Angeles Times, which credits congressional Republicans for offering an olive branch in debt reduction talks by way of their concession on tax increases. It’s President Obama‘s move, the paper says:
Republicans swallowed hard and accepted an increase in tax rates for the highest incomes to start the year. It’s the Democrats’ turn to recognize that federal benefit programs, and particularly healthcare entitlements such as Medicare and Medicaid, are on an unsustainable path despite the savings from the 2010 healthcare law.
Obama should lead a Democratic push for reforms that preserve these programs for those who need them, while also reducing the deficit and stopping the federal debt from growing faster than the economy.
