The legacy of Roe v. Wade in the black community

If you’re like me, you were disgusted by the Center for Reproductive Rights’ new ad which celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade:

There’s so much wrong with this video… here are just a few things off the top of my head:

1.) Everyone has their opinion and political issues they champion. Β I am pro-life and therefore disagree with pro-choicers, but I still held respect for them and their First Amendment rights. Β That was, until this video was released. Β What ever happened to pro-choicers’ general agreement that abortion is bad thing and should be “safe, legal and rare”?

2.) Instead ofΒ acknowledging the moral complications of abortion, the Center for Reproductive Rights flaunts its amoral stance and actually tries to portray abortion as something sexy. Β It seems our society has turned a dangerous corner when the issue of life becomes something to mock. Β And for all the pro-choicers out there who complain how the radical, religious right is chipping away at abortion rights, just consider this ad and how far society has come in accepting abortion as the rule, not an exception.

3.) Β The video starsΒ Mehcad Brooks, a television actor and model who appears none too concerned about the racist past of the pro-abortion movement he’s now hawking for.

4.) It’s also important to note that abortion disproportionately affects the African-American community more than any other ethnic group in America. Β Black women are three times more likely to have an abortion than white women. Β Although African-Americans make up just 12.6% of the population, they received 30% of the 1.2 million abortions in 2008 — that’s an average of 1,000 aborted black babies per day.

5.) When African-American babies aren’t being aborted, they’re being left behind. Β Seventy-two percent of black children today are being raised in a single-parent household. Β But Brooks proudly proclaims in this ad that abortion is there to “take care of the problem.” Β He rejects the notion that anyone should put limits on abortion and on him. Β The “limit” illegal abortion would put on a guy is “punishing” him with kids, i.e. responsibilities. Β (Ick!) Β This sort of irresponsible thinking is only perpetuating the degradation of women and the decline of the African-American family.Β

What do you think? Β What was your reaction to the video?

As a woman I was completely offended by this. It was completely off the ick charts! Seemed like he was telling woman they should all rejoice as they continue to drop their panties for their (like that was all they were good for), and that heck he didn’t even need to take any precautions as abortion would take care of any “little problems” that arose. Disgusting – managed actually to make abortion a male issue – not a female one. Kinda has the “Hey now there’s no reason for you not to spread your legs for me, and no reason for me to ever grow up and take responsibility – if it happens YOU can always kill it.” Disgusting.

I had to run for the vomit bucket. The video was disgusting. I felt like I was watching the devil himself and a XXX video to boot.

Regarding the issue of abortion…it was, is and always will be wrong. A vicious crime against an innocent child.

I fear there is no hope for America when I watch video’s like this. I fear there is no hope for the world when the worldometer on 1/23/2013 counter is already at 2,641,500 and counting of abortions so far this year globally.

Get ready, God is about to shake some sense into us all. Lord have mercy on us.

A law against abortion would be like a band-aid over a gaping wound, concealing the problem without curing it. Think of all that a law would not address:

it would not add to a woman’s mental, physical, emotional, financial, or educational resources.
It would not give her more family or friends nor broader and deeper ties to the community,
It would not add to the help and support she could expect to draw on from any of them.
It would not give her a husband, or strengthen an existing relationship.
It would not erase illness, disease or disaster in any form.
It would do nothing to address the desperation which can drive people to desperate acts.

Neither fear nor pain can be erased with the stroke of a pen.

I was pro-life, now I see more shades of grief and grey than black and white.
Choosing life regardless of any contingency or consequences would be a rather utopian luxury, and not everyone is able to accommodate it. It would not be the first time well intentioned people tried to judge other people’s decisions, and choose “better”. I am not competent to play god with someone else’s life.

No, I never had an abortion.

I heard a lady say it was a fetus not a baby. and I remembered when I was young I had gotten dizzy and found out I was pregnant I never once thought that it was a fetus or even just a little seed to grow
My daughter is now almost 30 and I may not have been the best mom but I do love her. and I am glad I did’nt Aborded or let her be adopted. I don’t understand these men either not wanting there children always trying to blame the woman or the dad’s that do want there child. They are told it is not there body. I would like to say it is Murder every aborted plus is a baby named by GOD in heaven.
People don’t get to say what sin is, The LORD does that. Man will say this is O.K. and this Oh and lets add this. But it is all sin in GOD”S eyes. And the books are being kept. The Lord Forgives us for our sins and we all have many and thank the LORD he died on the cross and shed his blood so you can ask him in and be forgiven of your sins. Start in Romans and John in Bible. People will do Sin but God only will deal with Sin. it is a free gift of his son now accept or reject. It is your choice. If we sin then we have a redeemer of sin through the blood of Christ. His blood shed for us makes us clean it will not be anything good we do. We all Sin. Repent and turn from your sins. By the way I heard a fetus has DNA. Which is a Human Baby. By the way to the dad’s and mom’s that are raising you children. It is a hard job. But Thank You.
