Krauthammer on the GOP and the Hispanic vote: ‘If we were running ideologically, we’d win’
Washington, D.C.– At the National Review Institute summit Friday night, columnist Charles Krauthammer touched on his “disappointment” with President Obama, the “conservatism as a second language” espoused by Mitt Romney and what’s it was like changing careers from psychiatry to political commentary.
We were there and we pulled the highlights…
–On the 2012 election, Krauthammer said the country made a decision, though “not a conscious decsion,” to “decline” by reelecting Obama.
–He said Obama is a “social democrat at heart” who looks to the European model: Direct all resources to “social welfare.” The problem with that, he said, is that Europe could look to the U.S. to provide its defense, whereas the U.S. has no one to turn to if it shifts resources from defense to social programs. “You can ignore your enemies but they won’t ignore you,” he said.
–Krauthammer on Romney’s failure as a presidential candidate: He said 2010 was a “resounding rejection” of Obama’s agenda. It was “purely ideological because there were no personalities involved. … You were voting on issues … Obamacare, the expansion and government … the relationship between citizen and State.” Krauthammer said in 2012 the injection of a personality (Romney) that couldn’t frame the race in terms of ideology is what cost Republicans the race. Romney was a “bad candidate … He wasn’t the best man on our side” to make the election about ideology, he said. “He made it about one issue: The economy.” The money quote: “Romney was a man who spoke conservatism as a second language. … He said he ran a ‘severely conservative’ administration in Massachusetts. … Severe is a word you associate with head wounds… not governing.”
–On his past “hope” for Obama: “In his first term he made very centrist appointments,’ Krauthammer said, naming former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. “These are not radicals.”
–Krauthammer explained his impression of Obama, after a three-hour meeting. “He showed extreme… respect… in understanding a contrarian argument.” He said Obama now responds to arguments by accusing his opponents of “bad faith, putting party over national interest.” Krauthammer: “I know [Obama] has the capacity to understand the other side, but he demagogues to show that the other side is not serious.”
–He talked about his past career as a psychiatrist: “The truth is that I’m a psychiatrist in remission… I haven’t had a relapse in 25 years.” On being a political analysist, Krauthammer said it “really isn’t that differen’t from being a psychiatrist: He’s still dealing with the “paranoid” and “delusions from grandeur.” He added, “the ony difference is that in D.C., those with paranoia have access to nuclear weapons.”
–Krauthammer on the GOP’s supposed demographics problem: “I don’t believe in the demographic theories.” He said so long as Republicans “stay the conservative party … they will succeed … The reason is we are a center-right country.” One problem with the GOP: “Republicans have lost the Hispanic vote … I think it’s unnecessary … I think that’s one community if we were running ideologically, we’d win.” The way to approach illegal immigration, he says: Convince the country that the border has been secured and that laws will be enforced while granting illegal immigrants currently in the country a type of amnesty without citizenship.

I like your attitude about not being stereotyped. Having said that, in a country such as ours, where we take in everyone from all over the world, it’s hard not to group people together just because of the nature of politics and policy-making. How do you propose we start? I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I just don’t see it happening.

Posted on January 28, 2013 at 4:59pmThank you, Cish60 . . . I think we start with changing the language of politics. For instance, what does right and left wing really mean? As to grouping people, it’s a natural thing that people do themselves, people naturally discriminate; most people do group people according to their looks, but the left has twisted it into something ugly. If people didn’t discriminate throughout time, there wouldn’t be different cultures, different people; people couldn’t police themselves because there would be no basis for judging right and wrong.
The problem is the victim mentality that is being taught to people, minorities were just the first groups to fall for the BS. The problem goes further than that, because many boys, usually of strong spirit, are labeled as ADHD problem children, victims of their body chemistry and on it goes. The libs make people into victim groups to promote envy, which is a cancer in people’s soul. No matter what you believe spiritually, only an ugly person is unable to share in happiness, that others are doing well; why are we allowing our people to become infected with this cancer?
Changing our political language is where I would start and all it would require is conservative media using new methods to reveal the truth to readers; quit using right wing, left wing, etc., other lib language and grouping methods to start. We all need to understand that it is an ideology that is our enemy; not a color of people, we could make it an interesting social p

Posted on January 26, 2013 at 9:30pmThere is a showdown coming between Latinos and blacks. In Los Angeles, Latino gangs are driving blacks out of sections of the city that for decades were predominately black. Compton was once entirely black but today it’s 65% Latino, 33% black. With blacks moving out in masse, escaping armed Latino gangs. This trend is taking place in all the large urban areas. As more and more Latinos enter the country. This should cause great concern in the black community. And what it will mean politically is yet unknown.

Posted on January 28, 2013 at 7:57amThat’s interesting…I’ve never heard of contention between Hispanics and blacks. I guess only time will tell how that all works out…
Thanks for the info.

And what do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul?
Considering the Biblical positions on gay and pro-life issues … I cannot comprehend how so many leaders within the Evangelical Black and Hispanic community advocated the election of Barack Obama for a second term.

Obama: ‘I Think Same-Sex Couples Should Be Able to Get Married’
“… I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married,” Obama told Roberts in an interview to appear on ABC’s “Good Morning America”.

Posted on January 26, 2013 at 1:36pmIn the past four years Barack Obama has been appeasing the major networks, Blacks, Muslims, Illegals, gays, entitlements and Hollywood in a deceptive effort to get elected and … it worked.
Alexis de Tocqueville”
A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been 200 years.
Great nations rise and fall. The people go from bondage to spiritual truth, to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to selfishness, from selfishness to complacency, from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back again to bondage.

Posted on January 25, 2013 at 11:28pmRomney was just to smart for the job, the Republican party has to run someone cool like Gary Sinese or Ted Nugent. Give a signing bonus for Illegals to get in line to become citizens, no amnesty. But goodies to do things the right way. Let everyone marry whoever and how many they want. Find something the libritarians can go ie do away with IRS. City people are the only ones who can have guns (country people don’t need them cause we have nice neighbors) Make college mandatory and free. No more wars, the rest of the world will just have to help themselves. LANDSLIDE!

Posted on January 26, 2013 at 3:43amAs smart as Krauthammer is, he sure seems to have a blind spot when it comes to Hispanics. His idea that they are attuned to the Republicans philosophically, but presumably are angry over amnesty is just a neoconservative/ Karl Rove lie. The truth is that Hispanics love big government almost as much as blacks do. Hispanics have no interest in smaller government, in fact, they see this nation as little more than a giant grab bag and they want their share. Republicans will never get more than 30 percent of the Hispanic vote, and they will be lucky to hang on to that much of it regardless of what they say or do.

Posted on January 26, 2013 at 1:23pmI think it’s dumb to put Hispanics in one group-think mode, it’s a mistake many conservatives make, with all due respect to Krauthammer. The different groups of Hispanics have competing interests! The ones born here, second, third-generation, etc., are Americans and should be addressed that way; unless they tell you different, which most likely means they will be Dems. The new immigrants may be Catholic, but will most likely be voting the way they did in their country of origin, which most likely means they will be Dems. The new arrivals are the ones you want to remind of why they left their home country and see who gets it, they will be your conservative voters. If you want to win Hispanics to conservatism, change your lib language and get rid of the labels; liberalism is a mental illness; you are only going to win over a certain number of any group anyway. Quit playing the libs game and go after the ones with common sense, there are more than you think!

Posted on January 26, 2013 at 2:02pmI think in the future, we need to get rid of the group divisions, in general. We need to think of and evaluate each person we vote for, do business with, etc., on the basis of their character and forget about the labeling. At the risk of starting another group, which I am not advocating, we do need a “no label” movement, of individuals holding other individuals personally responsible, to improve their character and the quality of our politicians! It may be sometimes offensive, but there are many people crying out for something real, that allows for their individuality.
I am brown in color and anytime I go to a church or political group and they want to stick me in the Hispanic group, I don’t go back. I am offended by the Hispanic group invitation; not because I dislike other brown people, but because Hispanic is usually code-word for the victim mentality; which I find offensive. If I want to be in a Hispanic group, I will join a Hispanic group but for politics, I am an American only and for church, I go there to worship, period!
