Re: No more Saturday mail
I read the latest news from the U.S. Postal Service about weekend delivery cutbacks and thought this bit was curious:
The Postal Service is making the announcement Wednesday, more than six months before the switch, to give residential and business customers time to plan and adjust, the statement said.
Why do we need six months to prepare for no mail delivery on Saturdays?

Posted on February 7, 2013 at 12:59pmJust a few points thrown in here:
1.) The postal Service doesn’t cost anyone a cent in taxes. It is solely financed by charges for service. So, no money saved by shutting it down…
2.) I don’t know if you recently used the Postal Service, but if you think that FedEx or UPS are cheaper you might be wrong.
3.) A lot of “last mile” delivery service for UPS or FedEx is actually done by the Postal Service. The Postal Service also does some sorting for UPS and FedEx. Now if the USPS is so inefficient, why would UPS or FedEx use the USPS to do their work? Maybe because they are cheaper?
4.) This is a free country (still, well mostly…) Nobody forces you to use the USPS. Take down your mailbox and try to get your letters (if you send any, or receive any) through either FedEx or UPS. Good Luck! Nobody in their right (business) mind would touch first class mail (or third class) with a ten foot pole. Because there is NO money made there… even by a more “efficient” provider
5.) Maybe someone should do a similar price increase analysis that MOLIMINOUS did for us so wonderfully for the USPS, for UPS and FedEx.
6.) The USPS does not usually take six months to deliver mail. If you would compare failure rates between all the big mailers they come out about equal. Nobody cares though if FedEx or UPS have a blunder. Not newsworthy… huh?
Well, I wish you all relaxing Saturdays from six months from now on… no more annoying Mailman to disturb your peace… nobody say they we

Posted on February 6, 2013 at 2:02pmHere’s the history of postal increases over time:
1863 $0.03
1958 $0.04
1963 $0.05
1968 $0.06
1971 $0.08
1974 $0.10
1975 $0.13
1978 $0.15
1981 $0.20
1985 $0.22
1988 $0.25
1991 $0.29
1995 $0.32
1999 $0.33
2001 $0.34
2002 $0.37
2006 $0.39
2007 $0.41
2008 $0.42
2009 $0.44
2012 $0.45
2013 $0.46
That’s an average 14.4% increase per year over time. That’s also an average time of 7.4 years per change. But if we factor only the last decade, that’s a 4.25% increase every 1.75 years. With this new “solution,” that means:
In Jan 2013 There will be no Saturday mail.
In Oct 2014 There will be no Friday mail.
In Jul 2016 There will be no Thursday mail.
In Apr 2018 There will be no Wednesday mail.
In Jan 2020 There will be no Tuesday mail.
In Oct 2021 There will be no Monday mail.
There’s not much difference between October 2021 and when we tend to get our mail each day (around 5:30 p.m.).

Posted on February 6, 2013 at 10:35ami could see some businesses that have saturday shifts that might depend on stuff coming in. they may also have to add more staff on monday to handle an extra day of backed up mail. as far as residential delivery they could stop that now and i wouldn’t care, heck, get rid of a few more days if it would save money!

Posted on February 6, 2013 at 9:29amI know how we can save billions of dollars more. Shut down the postal service FedEx, UPS, and many other PRIVATE companies do it better and cheaper.
While we’re at it we could lose about 90% of all other government agencies too.
1. NASA – SpaceX and similar private companies do it faster and cheaper.
2. National Endowment for the Arts – Why does the government need to be involved with art? Is there a shortage of artists?
3.Department of Education – return the the running of schools back to the parents where it should have been all along.
And this this is just the start….

Posted on February 7, 2013 at 1:08pmPostal Service doesn’t cost you (or anyone) a dime in taxes. So, no money saved there if you shut them down… You’ll see huge increases in postage, though, if run by private enterprise, since they (and I don’t blame them for it) want to make a profit. USPS has only to come up with all the prepaid pensions and the (mostly undeserved) bloated compensations for their fearless leaders. Just think it through…
I agree mostly with you other points. Namely 1. 2. and 3.
Have a wonderful day!
