USA Today weighs in on Boy Scouts-gay admission issue, recalls Jerry Sandusky

The Boy Scouts of America board votes tomorrow on whether to end its national ban on admitting gay members. Because the decision may only end the national ban, allowing local chapters to adopt their own admission policies, the New York Times called it an “unprincipled” stance.

USA Today says it’s a good thing:

Yes, some groups would continue to discriminate against gays, and we’d like to see the Scouts go even further. But for an organization that reaffirmed its anti-gay policy as recently as seven months ago, the compromise on the table would be major progress, and local option gets around one insurmountable obstacle.

To those who argue overturning the ban would lead to more sex abuse:… “[T]hey might want to think about Penn State’s Jerry Sandusky, who on paper would have appeared the perfect Scout leader: Husband and father. Football coach. Counselor for troubled youths. Everyone now knows what horrors that image hid.”

I hope the ban is lifted. It’s rather ridiculous to prohibit anyone from joining an organization that promotes honestly, love of country, responsibility, the rewards of hard work, etc.

The real issue is, it’s an open betrayal of part of the Scout Oath “To keep myself physically strong,
mentally awake, and morally straight.” Homosexuality is an immoral activity, even if it’s no worse a “sin” than drinking, adultery, lying, or gossip.

Arguments about predilections towards immoral behavior are meaningless because once you start down that “the Devil made me do it” path then you’re claiming people cannot rise above their animal nature.

The intention of the Progressive Left is to destroy traditional moral institutions of America – otherwise they would just start their own ‘Youth Pioneers’ and have whatever rules they desired.

Why is homosexuality immoral? I see nothing immoral about being gay. However, it seems pretty clear that discriminating against a certain group based on how they are born is pretty immoral. And if you’re going by the Bible, then you have to keep out those who eat shellfish and wear nylon as well.
