Video: Is homeschooling a universal human right?

The latest from Reason.tv takes a look at the case of Uwe and Hannelore Romeike, refugees from Germany who insist on homeschooling their children — an act illegal under German law. The Romeike family currently lives in the U.S., but are awaiting a final verdict on their refugee status from the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals. If they’re ultimately deported back to German, they could face hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines and could even lose custody of their children.

Reason’s Nick Gillespie speaks with Mike Donnelly, a lawyer for the Home School Legal Defense Association and a representative for the Romeike family.

I want to live with my dad&mom(my stepmom). When I finally got the guts to stand up for myself & show evereyone what i wanted,my life started to get crazy.I have talked to many people(GAL,counselor,my mother, caseworker, etc.)hoping they would help me in my situation, but none of them have done anything for me besides lie to me.I have also given reasons as to why I choose to live with my dad & mom instead of my own mother.I have asked all of these people numerous times”Why cant I live with my dad & mom?”but none of them had an answer. Now since they all know that my dad & mom are OTR truck drivers, their excuse is because of their work.I gave the suggestion of homeschooling so I could go with my dad and mom OTR.GAL,counselor,caseworker,mother,etc. all immediately turn down my idea because they all think homeschool is bad & unsocialable.I give them all the pros & facts about homeschool vs. public school.I AM NOT BEING HEARD!I am trying to contact people about my situation including Dana Loesch,Glenn Beck,60 minutes,& other higher political people who might be able to stand up for me & who have also experienced homeschooling OTR.Im not a stubborn child,I am just driven & determined & I wont let the courts dictate how my life is going to be!I want to be happy. Now i’ve been put in foster care & have been banned from visiting my dad & mom because i refuse to see my mother,my boiling point is to high.If anyone finds my situation unfair email DeronSugg@rwzlaw.com & jvalleroy@yahoo.c

There is millions of children here in the USA that are home school. They are in all of the states of the U.S. If I had small children, then my children would be home school. I don’t want my children to be in a unionized school and be taught to disregard the constitution, bill of rights and anything about the founding fathers. I want them to learn about all of the different wars in the USA, who the good or bad presidents were and they would be taught to honor God. They would be taught a lot of things that children today aren’t being taught, especially since 2008. We do not have a HI-Hitler regime, yet. We have our freedom, that is what is left of it. Obammy and czars have taken a lot away from us. I would love to have that German Family in the USA. It is a heck of a lot better then Obammy’s miserable terrorist.

No. Home schooling is not a ‘right’, when put into those strict terms. On the other hand, children are the ‘property’ of their parents( or are they?), who have the freedom to dispose of that property as they see fit, assuming they don’t violate the most fundemental of all rights: life.

Germany( and now in America) has had compulsory education for over a century, whose stated purpose is to prepare citizens for their ‘social’ obligations—which, in the time of Bismarck—-was tantamount to military indoctrination.

Its loathsome to contemplate that a country has ANY rights over the children of two individuals, and to assert such a right is tyrannical, at the very least, and quite possibly diabolical, in that the sole purpose is to extract children from an environment that might teach them different values and objectives than sought by the institutions of Government—-which are, essentially, individualism, self-reliance and responsibility.

It is, in fact, the reason America is Socialist. 100 years of progressive public education, with extraction of the child from the home.

It is, in fact, the very reason our country is finished, and now part of the ‘one world government’ order.
