There’s something much bigger at work when a significant portion of NBC’s Today show is spent with an ambulance sitting menacingly behind Matt Lauer

Ever since Lauer’s former Today co-anchor Ann Curry left the show in the messiest way possible last year, a spate of articles have reported that despite what he says and despite what NBC executives say, it was Lauer who wanted Curry out.

Curry’s exit has been bad for Lauer’s likability and bad for Today‘s ratings. Now there are reports that the show’s producers are looking to dump Lauer, reaching out to CNN’s Anderson Cooper as a possible replacement.

One day after that report on Cooper by the New York Times, Lauer sat at the Today desk in the show’s first hour with an ambulance just outside the window behind him, lights flashing. Emergency.

Al Roker explained: “One of our crowd had a bit of a fainting spell. They’re doing fine and we want to thank New York’s finest there.”
