In a fiery speech on the Senate floor Thursday evening, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, unloaded on SB 744, the so-called “Gang of Eight” immigration reform bill. Joined by fellow Republican Jeff Sessions, Lee rebuked the bill’s limited amendment process as “appalling” and “repugnant to the system of government under which we’re supposed to be operating.”

Instead of being responsible legislators, Lee went on to characterize the message from Senate leadership from both parties in this way: “be good senators, run along, and stay out of trouble; we’re taking care of this, and we’ll send you legislation as soon we’re ready.”

“Is there anything we can do to make this a real legislative body and not a rubber stamp?” he asked.
