New York Times Editorial Page Editor Andrew Rosenthal has no idea if President Obama will consider the paper’s controversial editorial calling for the U.S. to haver mercy on admitted NSA leaker Edward Snowden.

“That’s anybody’s guess,” Rosenthal told the Times’s Public Editor Margaret Sullivan.

The editorial, published Thursday, said the U.S. government should grant clemency to Snowden, who has received asylum in Russia after leaking information on American spying techniques.

The topic of the piece had been under discussion by the Times’s editorial board for weeks, according to Sullivan’s blog post.
