Last night, in connection with Professor Glenn Reynolds’ appearance on the Glenn Beck program, we asked Blaze readers to tweet us the one education reform you would implement to improve the U.S. educational system.
Below is an early sampling of your responses, which ranged from the wicked to the wonky. Be sure to check out Reynolds’ new book, “The New School” (review here), and if you’d like to join the conversation and potentially snag a free copy of “The New School,” follow @TheBlazeBooks and see below:
To snag a copy of @’s new book, follow & tweet us 1 change you would make to the US edu system w/ #TheNewSchool by 5PM ET on 1/17
Now to your responses.
One popular argument was the federalism argument:
@ @ @ #TheNewSchool Get the federal govt. OUT of educ all together. Push it back to the local/state level.
@ the edu sys is bogged down w/ fed bureaucracy. Make states have total control with voluntary fed involvement. #thenewschool
@ I would dissolve the DOE and move power back to the states. #TheNewSchool
As you might expect, unions received readers’ wrath:
@ I would dissolve the teacher's unions and institute pay for performance standards on public school teachers. #TheNewSchool
@ #TheNewSchool Abolish tenure, unions, & implement universal school choice
(Some less tactfully)
Others went for a homerun right away:
@ -- Glenn Reynolds should be named Sec. of Education & told to shrink Dept. to a size we can drown in a bathtub. #TheNewSchool
@ @ I suppose abolishing the Dept. of Ed. is too ambitious right off the bat? #TheNewSchool
Tenure was clearly one of the more reviled academic policies:
Abolish tenure. Every teacher I speak 2 says there are a few bad (yet protected) apples at all govt schools #TheNewSchool @
Along with Common Core:
@ @ Immediately dump common core. Begin restoring God in lessons. #TheNewSchool
Meanwhile, vouchers were popular:
@ Parents should be given vouchers if opting out of public school for private or homeschool #TheNewSchool
As was the concept of easing the barriers to entry in the education industry:
@ @ I would abolish the requirement of having to get a state license before being allowed to teach. #TheNewSchool
Along with market cost control:
@ @ Eliminate gov't interference in higher ed loans and allow the market to force cost control #TheNewSchool
@ #TheNewSchool Challenge to pick just one. Going for less obvious choice. Get Federal govt. out of college funding.
Changing what we teach:
@ I would return vocational training to high schools in a big way with cooperation w/industry. #TheNewSchool
Changing who teaches:
#TheNewSchool I would hire retired Drs., scientists, entrepreneurs who love to teach as teachers.
@ @ Student's parents designate 1 teacher they don't want. If class can't be filled, teacher is fired. #TheNewSchool
And last but not least for now, @Instapundit‘s favorite:
@ @ Prof. Reynolds was 1 of the few times in my higher ed experience where I got more than I paid for. #thenewschool
