White House press secretary Jay Carney rebutted on Sunday the assertion that the Obama administration is exceptionally “secretive,” as New York Times Executive Editor Jill Abramson suggested last week.

“I strongly disagree with that statement,” Carney said on ABC’s “This Week” Sunday. “I know from experience that it’s wrong. And, you know, we provide an extraordinary amount of information and access to reporters. And we work every day to provide more.”

In a recent interview with Al Jazeera America Abramson said the current administration has “the most secretive White House” she’s ever covered. “It’s on a scale I’ve never seen before,” she said.

The Obama White House has faced criticism from the national press for, among other things, circumventing traditional media, pushing its message instead through social media and official White House media material.
