Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has reportedly sold his house in Searchlight, Nevada, and various mining rights to a gold mine company.
According to an AP report, Reid sold these properties to Nevada Milling and Mining for $1.7 million.
Reid is known for having strong ties to the mining industry — so strong, in fact, that it has riled his allies on the left. The liberal Daily Kos published an article in 2009 citing a Mother Jones article that said Reid has helped the mining industry mine federal land without having to pay to restore that land when they were done.
It also blamed Reid for helping mining companies avoid paying royalties to the government, and notes his two sones work for law firms that representing mining companies.
“I submit that there are many other Senators in the Senate who are far more progressive than DINO Majority Leader Harry Reid,” the Daily Kos wrote, a reference to the term Democrat In Name Only.
The report says Reid believes the sale will allow the mine to expand, and create up to 60 jobs. It also says Reid and his wife plan to buy a home in Las Vegas.
