Daniel Halper’s Clinton, Inc. examines the rebuilding of the Clinton machine from the depths of the abyss that was the disgraced end to Bill Clinton’s presidency. In connection with their rebuilding, as outlined in Halper’s book, the Clintons and their proxies have used a variety of tactics to protect themselves, threatening perceived political enemies and intimidating their allies who consider dishing out valuable and potentially damaging information on the family.

Predictably, author Daniel Halper himself is now being subjected to the very attacks he writes of in his book, and he has taken to Politico to document what is occurring as the alleged Clinton spin and damage control machine swings into action.

Halper writes that while he is “well aware that the former (and perhaps future) first family and its massive retinue of loyalty enforcers, professional defamers and assorted gadflies would rue my intent to examine the real Clintons,” he was surprised at “what the Clintonistas are already doing to their own.”

What are the “Clintonistas” doing? Halper writes:

  • While I was still reporting on my book, James Carville’s office called, seemingly out of the blue, to grill me on whom I’d already spoken to. I obviously refused to indulge the questioner.
  • Someone from Bill Clinton’s publisher went to mine, HarperCollins, asking questions about my book and what I might be planning.
  • I write in my book that“Clintonites are known to scour through magazine articles and books to try to decipher blind quotes and tie them to a suspect.” I believed that was true. But now I know it is. This is in fact happening with my book as I write this, I’ve learned, and has been happening for days, if not weeks. Some are throwing other people to the wolves.
  • Other Clintonites named in the book are heading for the hills. Some preposterously denied that they ever talked to me. Perhaps it’s buyer’s remorse—but more likely they know the Clinton code of omerta.

As had been reported previously, someone or some group of people also had an interest in ensuring that the content of Halper’s book leak early, consistent with a historical Clinton practice according to Halper:

Some prominent media personalities with experience covering the Clintons in the 1990s told me that their team would have no problem with, say, copying every page of someone’s manuscript, sending it out to reporters ahead of publication, and then depicting it as a right-wing smear job.

In the Politico article, Halper outlines three tactics besides the leaking of information mentioned above as a means of discrediting and and neutralizing criticism of the Clinton machine: “media intimidation tactics,” “defame and attack” and the “old news trick.”

Halper believes these tactics have already been employed, with mainstream media sources refusing to give Halper airtime for fear of retribution and ignoring sourced bombshell stories and sending out attack dogs like Clinton aide Nick Merrill to attack Halper’s work (even before it was officially released). To date it appears the Clinton machine has not felt the need to argue that Halper’s damaging and/or salacious revelations are “old news.”
