Just because someone makes a statement, it doesn't mean that the statement holds up under scrutiny.

Are you feeling safer from foreign threats these days in America? President Barack Obama certainly believes so.

Obama recently told NBC’s “Today” show that the U.S. has been “pretty successful” in preventing major attacks since Sept. 11, 2001.

Since Obama wasn’t “in-charge” of the country until 2008, that would mean that former President George W. Bush, should also be credited by Obama for keeping Americans safe from 2001 until Obama was subsequently elected.

But since when did Obama give anyone else credit for their contribution?

Remember, it was Obama who said that “he” was responsible for killing Osama bin Laden, the founder and head of the Islamic State militant group Al Qaeda in 2011, when United States Navy SEALs claimed that they were responsible.

Author and former SEAL Brandon Webb indicated in 2012, that “Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, deserved much of the praise for taking out the world’s most wanted man.”

However, if Obama gave Bush or even the SEALs credit then this would serve to debunk his statement that Americans are safer because of him.

Obama also states that he has been “pretty successful” in preventing major attacks in America but this implies that there are other times when he hasn’t been so successful in keeping Americans safe.

To be fair, one would need to ask Obama what he considers a “major” attack.

Does a major attack mean that it only applies to attacks in which there were multiple deaths?

Obama did indicate that “it’s important for us to also just look at the track record of how many Americans have actually been killed during the course of this past decade.”

Therefore, it is apparent from his statement that the “number” of Americans killed is more important in deciding his success rate than the number of "incidents" in which Americans were harmed or killed.

I disagree with Obama’s assessment. The number of incidents matter to our safety.

Since Obama began his first term as president, there have been numerous incidents on U.S. soil that disproves Obama’s claim that Americans are safer under his administration.

I counted at least 23 incidents that I would consider acts of terrorism or attacks on Americans in the U.S. Some have caused injury or death while other incidents were attacks of another nature.

While I obviously will not be able to list all of them here, I would like to point out some of the more egregious attacks that have occurred while Obama has been president.

In March 2008, a Recruiting Office in Times Square was damaged by a homemade bomb. It was later revealed that the ammunition used was the same as that used in the Iraq and Afghanistan war zones.

The Wall Street Journal reported in April 2009, that intruders left malware in power grids, water and sewage systems that could be activated at a later date. It was surmised that the attacks may have originated from China and Russia, but the report indicated that it was unclear whether they were state-sponsored or errors in the computer code.

There was a shooting in June 2009, at an Arkansas military recruiting office in which, Abdulhakin Mujahid Muhammad allegedly shot and killed a military recruiter and seriously wounded another in what may have been an act of Islamic terrorism. Muhammad reportedly converted to Islam after visiting Yemen for 16 months then became radicalized after spending time in prison there. Muhammed reported that he was part of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

While you may have forgotten the above incidents, the November 2009 shooting at Ford Hood will not soon be forgotten. Nidal Malik Hasan, a U.S. Army major serving as a psychiatrist, killed 13 and wounded 29. Hasan claimed that his motive was jihad to fight “illegal and immoral aggression against Muslims.”

The year 2010 brought with it a shooting at the Pentagon that injured two Pentagon police officers, while 2012 included a Wisconsin Sikh temple shooting in which six people were killed and three others were injured. The shooting was classified as domestic terrorism.

Another act of terrorism occurred in April 2013 during the Boston Marathon when two bombs were detonated, killing three and injuring more than 180 people. One of the alleged bombers, Tamerian Tsamaev, was killed while his brother, Dzhokhar Tsamaev, was charged with the crime.

Then in 2013, there was a shooting at the Los Angeles International Airport in which one Transportation Security Administration office was killed and six other people were injured. The alleged motive included an anti-government agenda.

In 2014, two New York City police officers were wounded by a hatchet attack, supposedly by an Islam convert and soon thereafter, two New York City police officers were ambushed and killed in December 2014, while they sat eating their lunches in their patrol car. Allegedly both attacks were due to negative feelings against the U.S. government and police, respectively.

Finally, in 2014, a woman was beheaded and another woman stabbed in Oklahoma at their place of employment by an alleged recent convert to Islam. The FBI has since indicated that this incident was not linked to terrorism.

After recalling these events, is it any wonder that Americans may not feel safer under Obama’s governance?

I’m originally from the South. So, after hearing Obama’s assurance to Americans that they are safer under his watch, I just respond as any Southerner or American might by saying, “I’m feeling as safe as a hen in a hen house guarded by foxes under Obama's watch.”
