Beck: Media Missed The Point of ‘Obama in Pee Pee’

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

For the past three days, Glenn has been trying to make a point about the Constitution, but the media seems to be missing it. Not surprisingly, the media and the left flew into outrage mode over Glenn’s placing of a fake Obama into a fake jar of urine. They have said that he’s trying to make money and get his name in the paper again. That he’s trying to rile up the left by taking the President and desecrating his image. But the truth is, Glenn has always been about trying to educate through entertainment, but the media once again wants to focus on the presentation and not on the message.

Unlike most cable news commentators, Glenn has never been one to just sit behind a desk and read off a teleprompter. It works great for a lot of successful TV personalities, but not Glenn. Instead, he’ll often use props, chalkboards, live animals, and other tools to make his point. His ability to entertain the audience while talking about complex and often depressing economic and political issues is a big reason why he became such a popular personality on television and radio.

So on Tuesday night when Glenn wanted to talk about the Constitutionally protected right for an artist to paint Barack Obama as Jesus Christ on the cross, of course he would use a lot of crazy props to make his point.

He used paintings from Jackson Pollack, Rubens, and Picasso to point out that even though he’s not particularly impressed by the art and some would find images of naked people uncomfortable, the Constitution protects a person’s right of freedom of expression. Even something Glenn finds personally offensive, like Michael D’Antuono’s painting of Obama in the pose of Jesus being crucified, is Constitutionally protected. At the same time, when Glenn puts a toy Obama in a mason jar filled with yellow liquid in order to artistically express himself, that’s constitutionally protected as well.

“Art is in the eye of the beholder and this guy has a right to do this. I think its offensive. I don’t think it’s close to reality but whatever floats your boat. I support his right to do exactly that. I agree with him that people who are upset should not trump his right to be able to do it and be able to hang it wherever he wants – as long as its wanted there,” Glenn said Tuesday night.

“That document (The Constitution) says I can’t stop him, and the spirit of that document is that I shouldn’t try,” he said.

Glenn went into further detail on radio Thursday morning. “Why did I do this? To make sure that we were consistent on the Constitution. That if we say it’s wrong that you should be able to make fun of the prophet Mohammed, then we have to then say it’s constitutionally protected to make fun of Jesus Christ. It’s constitutionally protected if you’re an artist or you’re a clown or you’re a bum,” he said.

“The only speech worth protecting are those things we find offensive. And I made this (“Obama in Pee Pee”) to ask the left after the monologue of we have to protect art, we have to protect speech. All speech, and the speech that we find most offensive is the one that you really have to stand up for.”

But most stories in the media have missed this point entirely or chosen to bury it in order to focus on the plastic toy in fake urine and the supposed outrage.

Unfortunately, the media also missed the story that the money raised from the auction is benefitting Mercury One’s “Hope for the Holidays” campaign. The media simply says “Glenn Beck is selling it on eBay” with no mention of the charity component.

By ignoring the charity, the media continues to try and paint Glenn as some selfish and phony pied piper who is trying to squeeze as much money out of his fans as possible. This is simply untrue. While Glenn was initially making a point about Constitutional rights, Glenn took the media attention and has been trying to turn it into something to help others.

One last point the most news stories have not reported: Artist Michael D’Antuono appeared on Glenn’s show Wednesday night and talked to Glenn at length about his art, and even said that his impressions of Glenn were wrong and he found him to be a reasonable man.

“As much as I’m making a point with ‘Obama in Pee Pee’, I’m not stupid I know Michael Moore will tweet about it and that will be good for my business,” Glenn told D’Antuono. “I believe in what I’m doing, you believe in what your work and what you’re doing but it doesn’t hurt.

D’Antuono told Glenn that he did very much believe in his work and what he was expressing, but acknowledged that the controversy and conversation that comes along with his artistic expression “doesn’t hurt”.

As the first portion of the interview came to a close, D’Antuono shook Glenn’s hand and said “You’re a very reasonable man” and added “I’m shocked”. Glenn laughed and ended up keeping D’Antuono on for an extra segment, and they ended up talking about how Americans can no longer have honest conversations.

“I consider what I do to be like circus performer art. And part of it is to shake people and wake them up and then get them to have a conversation. And maybe what you do and I do takes the conversation and pushes into an ugly place and so we can’t. But I would like to think the reason why we don’t have these conversations is that there aren’t enough people on either side that are seen in the media and so we can’t,” Glenn told D’Antuono.

So let’s recap. Defending the Constitution? Buried or ignored. Charity component? Nope, the media wants Glenn to push the image of Glenn as a selfish conman rather than a charitable entertainer. Reasonable man who wants to have an honest conversation? Zip. Zero. Nadda. No one in the media wants to call Glenn Beck “reasonable”.

No, rather than having an honest conversation the media once again goes for the easy, lazy headlines that make fun of Glenn and call out the antics rather than the deeper message and substance behind entertainment.

  Happypenwomen. Ignorance does not make our lord proud. Neither does weakness. I would highly suggest that you take six months to of course keep up with your daily bible study, but also includes at least two hours a day for six months to read a variety of subjects. Include books, magazines, etc. on popular culture and political thought.

  Happingpenwomen. I would be surprised if you are a bible believing christian. But hope you are. However, the way you worded your reply to Glen, leaves pause. For unbelievers use bits and pieces of the bible which is all distorted and uneven, to make a case against christians. They themself however usally failed to even attempt to live the tenants. One thing that christian know, is that they are horrible sinners. Each and every christian is full of sin. Some maybe more than others, but that is only a degree of difference. So Happingpenwomen, the truth is, only Christ blood will save. Not good works or poetic speech. Just humble wish for grace and forgiveness. Here’s hoping you are a christian.

I believe this was a tasteless, tacky stunt. I thought Glenn was better than this. We don’t have to do the same things as the left to prove their bias: we lower ourselves when we do. And Glenn already had t-shirts ready to be sold? Yet expressed surprise at the reaction? Disappointing, and not funny.

  This is the sort of thing that makes me tune Beck out. He has a good base message, but he has a carney/hustler vibe to him. He likes shock value and seldom fails to find a way to turn it into a few dollars. Sort of like creating a huge production to sell some bibles, for a huge profit. Why aren’t you lashing out at him for being disgusting? Glenn only did “Obama in pee pee ” Because of Michael D’Antuono’s Crucifix in pee pee. Why can Michael D’Antuono create such art and Glenn cannot? The liberal media did not attack Michael D’Antuono, but they attacked Glenn. It just proves how deceitful the leftists media really is.

Though man may do a thing does not necessarily mean he should and certainly does not absolve him of the responsibility of his actions. Nor does it exempt him from the consequences of his actions whether it be positive or negative. Jesus in a bottle of urine was wrong. Obama in a bottle of urine is wrong. To have a double standard is wrong. There is no difference no matter what the reason whether it be called art, to validate a belief, raise awareness or as a publicity stunt. Missed the point? What the heck is Beck talking about? Yes, some (but only some) people in the media expressed distaste for the Obama in Pee Pee, but there was no serious effort form anyone to say that Beck didn’t have a right to do it! No one came even close to threatening his 1st Amendment right!

It’s rare that I comment on here but I have to say between warphead, skinner, encinom and longknifed they completely missed the point (not that I would expect them to get it). He made a point which you all have proven. No one on the left was outraged at P!ss Christ (a crucifix dipped in REAL urine) but you dip their “lord and savior Barack Obama” in fake pee and off the cliff they go. Sure he could have said “What if I did this?” but then you could not prove what the left would do. When he presented “Obama in Pee Pee” the left did what everyone knew they would do. They went completely unhinged yet not one peep over Obama being depicted as a crucified Jesus. Liberals aren’t even hiding their hypocrisy anymore.

  Actually, I think you are missing the point. Beck has a right to put the Obama in the pee pee, and people have a right to be outraged about it. No one tried to abridge Beck’s rights, so how exactly does that constitute hypocrisy? Beck is trying to play the victim here without actually being victimized by anyone.

  No one and I mean no one could be more at odds with our current political administration is I. I missed no point as their was no point to miss. Glenn Beck exhibited the same behavior that the right has condemned, including Glenn Beck himself. If you base your beliefs in integrity and you fight against those who have none, how in the he# are you going to win if you employee the very same disgusting tactics? That is insane. I supported Glenn Beck and his heartfelt desire for his fellow man to find civility, integrity and morality. Then he turns around and commits a vile immoral act to supposedly make a point that we all ready knew. You would have to be a complete moron to not know that there is bias in the media, in the government and between right and left. It took no disgusting act copied from the left to prove this point. We all new it already and so does the left. But by God now the left has one big stick handed to them to just absolutely beat the living he# out of Glenn Beck every time he opens his mouth. I didn’t want this. I didn’t want to face the ugly truth. But because my beliefs are so deeply rooted in truth and integrity I cannot and will not pretend that what Glenn Beck did was OK. If a man is wrong he is wrong. To place a figure that represents another man in a jar of urine for any reason or by any one man or group is just plain wrong. Some lines are just not to be crossed. The left does not universally praise the Piss Christ, some do, some find it crass, others dismiss it as attention seeking and some are offended. Instead of seeing the hypocrisy of defending Jesus in real urine as a “not offensive at all” piece of art while slamming the Obama in fake urine as an offensive piece of garbage, they instead responded with the same knee-jerk reaction: criticize Beck for insulting Obama.
  
  And eBay, nice job. You won’t let Beck sell the jar because of you policy against urine being sold, even though everyone knows it’s fake (and you refuse to let Beck put it back on despite the clarification), but you DO allow people to sell FAKE poop. I like you Glenn, stick to the mission don’t detour and bend to the will of the obvious far left believers….you had the right direction, you have made a big change in lot of mixed peoples lives…don’t lose focus buddy. Entertainment is one thing, remember the direction we are all suppose to take when it comes to the lies that the left feeds us, can’t counter with the same, take the high road and lead in that direction that is right.

Nasty, crude and socially unacceptable acts, whether protected by free speech or not, are still nasty, crude and socially unacceptable. I have come to expect this from a segment of our population and distance myself from them as much as possible. These nasty, crude and socially unacceptable people make it quite easy to differentiate from those that are not nasty, crude & socially unacceptable either by their promotion, acceptance or participation in nasty, crude and socially unacceptable acts. Glenn Beck has built his career by denouncing crude, nasty and socially unacceptable people and the acts they commit. Now he has become exactly what he has for so long said was wrong. I have been a follower of Mr. Beck for many years but I will now have to look elsewhere for guidance and leadership in the war to restore civilized behavior, ethics and morality to the populace. Mr. Beck negated any further argument he may have raised in support of ethics and morality as he is admittedly done exactly what he has railed against for years. His viability is gone. His argument for a better country is gone. And the most devastating of all is his integrity that he has fought so hard to restore has been destroyed yet again by his own hand. He for all intents and purposes pulled a pistol from his jacket, placed it to his head and pulled the trigger on all the work he has done and would have done. I will not and cannot follow a man bent on self destruction. Glenn, what were you thinking?

  Glenn Beck, You owe the world an apology. What you did was despicable, childish and normally only seen coming from someone on the left. It was not funny. It was disgusting to see a grown man playing with a jar of urine. I know it wasn’t real urine but that is beside the point. To make a point or to promote such disgusting filth in any manner is to me a sign of a very disturbed person. When the Jesus in the jar of urine first appeared I like most was appalled. But as appalled as I might be I did take comfort in knowing that I belong to and believe in the right and the disgusting display had come from my sworn enemy, the left. The right does not do this type of vile act no matter what the reason. For in doing such you become what you have always said that you despise. There is no reason, justification or excuse for what Mr. Beck has done. A sane, stable, responsible man does not commit such acts. One word comes to mind, hypocrite. Ted Rawl produced a cartoon making fun of former President Reagan while he lay in state. Placing a figure of any man in a jar of urine, in my eyes is no less of a despicable act as that committed by Mr. Rawl.

If you’re so much better than these people you speak down upon (including Glenn), and you “distance yourself from those people,” then why are you posting on this site? Does Glenn need a “reason, justification, or excuse” for what he did? I think not. I believe there was a method to his madness…..and it was demonstrated brilliantly in my opinion. Your claim to leaning right is questionable because it seems that all that you’ve spewed on this thread has come from the LEFT side of your mouth. I’m not saying…..I’m just saying.

We all know that the left does these vile acts. We all know that their is a double standard when it comes to the right or left. The right doesn’t do this. That is what differentiates the right from the left. Glenn ole buddy, did exactly what you have for years denounced no matter what in he# your reasoning was. You stepped in it big time. My God, what were you thinking? You have nothing to stand on now that you commit the very vile acts that you told everyone is wrong. I’m just shaking my head in disbelief, shame, embarrassment and betrayal.

  WHATAHKA. The criticisms I have voiced contain nothing nasty, crude or socially unacceptable. I am neither holy or any better than other men. As for distancing myself from people who find that placing an effigy of Jesus or Obama in a bottle of piss, is a source of pride. I would imagine that most on this site feel the same way except those like you. Though it is none of your business why I post on this site I will indulge you once. It is because this site and the ideals promoted here more closely resemble my own than any other. I feel as if I am a part as I have followed Glenn Beck and his radio programs since the day he started. I have given financially to assist in its continuation and success. Glenn Beck needs no reason, justification or excuse to do or say anything. But, if the man is dead wrong I am not so shallow as to look the other way and act as if nothing happened. The fact that you think that Glenn Beck, by placing an effigy of any man in a bottle of piss and then broadcasting for all the world to see is OK, leads me to the conclusion that your morality and sense of right and wrong are severely compromised. This deficit is a defining characteristic of those on the left. What I say comes from neither the left or right side of my mouth but are clear and concise words that express my thoughts and beliefs. Lastly, I do not end what I write with some childish rhetoric consisting of “I’m not saying…..I’m just saying”. Say what you mean and mean what you say

Beck is a fraud. That is the point. I remember 3 years ago I heard a caller say that we shouldn’t have to buy car insurance or healthcare insurance. Then Beck and the boys went to town on him claiming that “in nowhere does the constitution say you have a right to drive.” That goes right along with Obama’s “you didn’t build that.”

He is a partisan, neocon hack. Republicans and Democrats agree on almost everything other than a few buzz words – abortion, immigration, infidelity.

The Media got it right, the stunt was just that a stunt by an irrelavent clown in an vain attempt to regain his 15 minutes.

Instead of having a serious debate and dicussion, Beck falls on crude jokes. The man is schizo, one day he is serious about some latest conspiracy theory and grand schemes, the next he is selling a jar of his urine.

  Hey look, I’m not defending E, but he/she/it probably made a typo and probably knows how to spell the word irrelevant. Give him/her/or whatever a break. I make stupid spelling and grammatical errors here all the time. Anyway, E. has more serious ‘issues’ to deal with than learning how to spell and they are many: Logic, philosophy, critical thinking, not to mention mental are just a few. You can feel the terminal anger and rightuous indignation in E’s comments. In my psychological studies, such characteristics where once called demented, today they are called liberalism. It’s very sad. If I were a doctor, and I play one on tv often, I’d recommend he go to a local bar, get drunk and while there seek the professonal help of the bar tender who would then probably have E committed.
