While clinking steins at the Springfield Oktoberfest, a Lederhosen-clad Homer Simpson observed: “Ah the Germans…you just can’t stay mad at ‘em!”
But it doesn’t matter if the rest of the world is sore over that whole 1914 to 1945 business or not, because the Germans are apparently mad enough at themselves still. Certainly their post-World War II schizophrenia continues into the 21st century. Beneath their well-deserved national pride bubbles a deep reservoir of shame over a litany of atrocities carried out in the name of National Socialism and their mad Führer.

Although now three generations removed from Adolf Hitler, Germans still feel compelled to prove to the world, and themselves, how compassionate they have become; hence their national policy to open their doors to over 1 million Muslim "refugees" in the span of a year. Admirable on its face, there is a dark side to this story being played out in the European streets much to the chagrin of Western liberal elites for whom multiculturalism has become a bizarre fetish.
According to the United Nations the majority of this latest 2015 wave of non-European immigrants were men who hail from some of the most primitive, violent regions on earth … with predictable results to anyone with common sense.
This New Years Eve, the city of Cologne, one of the great cultural centers of Old Europe, was the scene of a riot carried out by over 1,000 of these same “refugees.” After being ordered by the police to clear the square where they were sowing chaos, the mob of young men split off into gangs and proceeded to surround and sexually harass young German women (to put it gently). Hundreds of criminal complaints have been filed thus far, including at least two allegations of rape.
This was not a one-off event in the new multicultural Germany.
The daughter of a priest described Munich on New Year’s Eve as a “warzone,” with “Arab-looking foreign young men” deliberately launching fireworks into crowds of revellers. Another woman reported girls being sexually assaulted and robbed in Stuttgart. In Detmold, North Rhine-Westphalia local news media described an attacker there who assaulted two 21-year-old women as “dark skin type” with a beard. The Daily Mail reports that the refugee camp in Giessen has become a cauldron of sexual violence against defenseless women.
Says one letter written by social workers and women's groups in the Giessen camp:
Many women have felt the need to sleep in their clothes ... they won’t go to the toilet at night because rapes and assaults have taken place on their way to, or from, there … It is a fact that women and children are unprotected. This situation is opportune for those men who already regard women as their inferiors and treat unaccompanied women as ‘fair game.’
And herein lies the great unspoken elephant-in-room question: what do Frau Angela Merkel and others expect when in the course of just one year over a million Muslim males (58 percent are men, only 17 percent women, the rest children) who come from lands where misogyny is culturally acceptable are suddenly injected into a world of unveiled European lasses in skirts, high heels, and make-up? Add to this cocktail of sexual frustration and oppressive social mores, a religion wherein certain strains preach such women offend Allah, and thus are fair game.
As columnist Brett Stephens of The Wall Street Journal summed it up, in the spirit of Christian charity, Germany has imported Muslim misogyny.
What happened in Cologne and elsewhere comes as no surprise to anyone who has followed the demographic upheavals in Sweden since they too became the haven for immigrants from the Muslim world.

Forty years after the Swedish parliament unanimously decided to change the formerly homogenous Sweden into a multicultural country, violent crime has increased by 300 percent and rapes by 1,472 percent. As native ethnic Swedes have a flat to negative birth rate, the 18 percent population growth of the country from 1975 to the present is entirely the result of immigration. Sweden is now No. 2 on the list of rape countries, surpassed only by Lesotho in Southern Africa. In just the last 10 years rapes in Sweden have nearly tripled. Today Sweden is deemed the rape capital of the Western world.
The Scandinavian nation once synonymous with statuesque blondes and tranquil living has become so hobbled by political correctness that it now covers up the crimes committed by its new residents, even when it comes to sexual assault. In short, they would rather put Swedish girls at risk than dare offend the foreigners in their midst. Just this week a hitherto suppressed story broke that a five-day festival in Stockholm this summer saw another eruption of sexual assaults against women. Scores of suspects were detained, mostly from Afghanistan, many carrying temporary ID-cards issued to asylum-seekers.
"We probably should have communicated this," head of communications for the Stockholm police, Varg Gyllander, told the Associated Press. "But we wouldn't have discussed ethnicity at all." (Of course not!) Gyllander refused to confirm the ethnicity of the alleged attackers in Stockholm...but he said "this involves young men who are not from Sweden." Ah. Perhaps they were from Iceland?
Certainly sexual assault and rape are global issues, and, of course, the West is far from immune. But at least here such behavior, though it does often occur, is treated like the crime it is, and vigorously prosecuted. As a Pew survey I cited in another article for TheBlaze shows, attitudes towards women in the parts of the world from which the migrants flow are vile and, when unleashed upon the squares of Western cities, dangerous.
To be fair to Europe, liberalism is a global disorder and the apologist penchant for sweeping the blindly obvious under the rug to avoid giving offense exists in our own country as well.
Last week a Philadelphia police officer was shot and seriously wounded by an assailant wearing a flowing dishdasha who claimed he fired because “the police defend laws that are contrary to Islam.” Yet with a straight face Mayor Jim Kenny declared: “In no way, shape or form does anybody in this room believe that Islam or the teaching of Islam” had anything to do with the attack. “This was a criminal with a stolen gun.”
You can't make this up.
Meanwhile, Germany atones for its sins by admitting mass waves of economic migrants posing as war refugees. It then turns a blind eye when its fabled multicultural Utopia blows up in its face in a blinding flash of reality that is the ongoing clash of civilizations. And how does the female mayor of Cologne, Henreiette Reker, respond to a mass sexual assault in her city?
“There’s always the possibility of keeping a certain distance of more than an arm’s length — that is to say, to make sure yourself you don’t look to be too close to people who are not known to you and to whom you don’t have a trusting relationship.”
Indeed, it’s those trollopy Fräuleiner who are to blame. (Try to imagine a college dean offering that advice after a mass sexual assault occurred on the university quad!)
Still, some Western leftists have been so irrevocably marinated in self-loathing that they are incapable of placing the blame for even the most blatant criminal acts on the perpetrators.
Writes Anna Sauerbrey of the New York Times: "The real question we should be asking is not whether there is something inherently wrong with the refugees, but whether Germany is doing an effective job of integrating them."
Yes. Perhaps each refugee ought to undergo sensitivity training upon arrival and handed pamphlets entitled: "Why Rape Is Good For Thee, But Not For Me."
If Germany continues its suicidal open border policy things are only going to get more chaotic. According to Germany’s Development Minister Gerd Müller only 10 percent of Syrian and Iraqi migrants have reached Europe so far and “eight to ten million are still on the way”, with even more to come from Africa.
The choice is Germany’s … for now.
