GOP Letter to Iran Proves Only One Thing: They Are Just as Dangerous and Treacherous as Democrats

It was as wrong of the GOP to reach out to Iran as it was for Democrat Ted Kennedy to reach out to the Soviets.

Republican senators fired off a letter to the world's number one state sponsor of terror, Iran. The letter, penned in the light of day, informed the radical Islamists who run that country that any deal brokered by President Barack Obama is subject to Congressional approval and may not stand.

Where I agree with the GOP sentiment, I can't agree with their tactics.

Are Senate Republicans so devoid of courage that they must run to Iran to stand up to Resident Obama?

As we saw in the Department of Homeland Security funding fiasco, the Grand Old Party leadership was unwilling to do what it took to stop Obama’s lawless executive inaction memo. They stopped short of using the Constitutional remedies of reconciliation, or the nuclear option, both tactics used against them by Democrats, to stand up for America.

This pattern of cowardice is deplorable domestically. Seeing the same pattern in international affairs is dangerous.

Politics is supposed to stop at the water’s edge. We know we can’t rely on Democrats to uphold any standard, much less that one. So the responsibility falls to the grown-ups, heretofore the GOP. But when the Republicans behave like Democrats abroad, it should be of great concern to the entire nation.

The late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) undermined a sitting president. He did so with the help of a declared enemy of America. As Forbes pointed out back in 2009, Kennedy pledged to aid the Soviets in their efforts to thwart President Ronald Reagan’s objectives to defeat them. In return, Kennedy wanted the USSR’s help in defeating Reagan in the 1984 election.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani answers a question during press conference in New York on September 26, 2014. Rouhani said Friday that talks with international powers on Tehran's nuclear program must move forward more quickly, saying limited progress had been made in recent days. 'The remaining time for reaching an agreement is extremely short. Progress that has been witnessed in the last few days has been extremely slow,' he told reporters in New York, where he attended the UN General Assembly. This traitorous action by Kennedy, conspiring with a foreign power to undermine a sitting president for political gain, was largely done in secret. It also was largely ignored by the mainstream media when it was revealed years later.

I’ve never forgotten this treachery. It has been a reminder to me of how anti-American and worthy of contempt Democrats are. It’s a stark reminder of the seemingly endless agenda of the American left, to act contrary to the best interest of our nation and to prop up, aid, and conspire with America’s enemies. Is it any wonder that it was Ted Kennedy’s endorsement that inflicted Barack Obama on our nation?

I’m not blinded by the obvious differences in the two cases outlined above. The GOP did their work in full view of the American people and the world, while Ted Kennedy kept his scandalous action hidden from view. It bears pointing out that Obama too is working in secret, sending correspondence to Iran’s leaders that We The People don’t get to see. I note that the GOP is trying to prevent a declared enemy from getting stronger while Kennedy was trying to strengthen an enemy to America.

But given all of this, I can’t sanction the Republican action.

Obama is America’s problem. It is up to our opposition party to deal with that problem at home. If a political party has to run to a foreign power to do the job, it says more about the political party than it does about the president they are opposing.

The Republican Party just lowered itself to the level of a Democrat. America should be very disturbed. We’ve just had it confirmed that we’ve nowhere to turn for leadership, integrity and the American values we cherish. It is a sad day.
