There’s something unsettling about the public flogging of Chick-fil-A by government officials hell-bent on destroying a privately owned American company simply because of the owner’s personal opinions.

Democratic lawmakers in more than a half dozen major cities have led the charge – slandering Chick-fil-A’s owner and calling for all-out bans on the company’s expansion efforts in places like Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, and San Francisco.

And Chick-fil-A’s only crime – is being a family-owned company that ascribes to the teachings of the Holy Bible – a belief that marriage is a union between one man and one woman.

Chick-fil-A’s president has been called a bigot, a homophobe. The mayor of Washington, D.C. accused the company of peddling “hate chicken.”

Philadelphia City Councilman Jim Kenney introduced a resolution condemning the company — and its president – Dan Cathy.

“This particular individual is rabidly homophobic and wants to deny Americans civil rights that are enjoyed by every other American,” Kenney said.

There are efforts underway to shut down Chick-fil-A restaurants across the country. Student groups are launching similar campaigns on university campuses.

Lost in their outrage over a belief held by a majority of the American public, is the fact that Chick-fil-A employs thousands and thousands of people.

And with unemployment hovering around 8.2 percent, you have to wonder what sort of message Democrats are trying to send to the nation.

Perhaps the party of President Barack Obama believes it’s morally better to be unemployed than to be anti-gay marriage?

American Christians are facing uncertain times. Our nation’s values are under assault. Religious liberty has been undermined. We live in a day when right is now wrong and wrong is now right.

The vicious leftwing assault against Chick-fil-A should serve as a wakeup call to people of faith. It’s not about a chicken sandwich. It’s about religous liberty. It’s about free speech. It’s about the future of our nation.

“Individuals have the right to decide whether or not to ‘eat mor chikin.’ But no government leader should restrict a business or organization from expanding to their district based on the personal or political views of the owners,” said Leith Anderson, president of the National Association of Evangelicals. “Such evident discrimination and attempts to marginalize those with religious values have no place in American democracy.”

And while Chick-fil-A’s public flogging has garnered headlines, there are other instances of Christians facing persecution for their religious beliefs.

  • A family-owned bakery in Indianapolis was subjected to a city investigation after they declined to make cupcakes for National Coming Out Day. The owner of Just Cookies explained to local media they have “two young, impressionable daughters and we thought maybe it was best not to do that.”
  • The artistic director of the California Musical Theater resigned under significant pressure after he gave money to support a measure that outlawed same-sex marriage in California. Scott Eckern, who is Mormon, was outed by activist bullies. As one activist told the New York Times, “I do believe there comes a time when you cannot sit back and accept what I think is the most dangerous form of bigotry.” Spoken like a true bigot.
  • The Washington Blade published the names and addresses of 110,000 Maryland residents who signed a petition to put the state’s new marriage equality law onto the November ballot. Why? To intimidate the voters? I suspect the names were not published so readers could send them Christmas cards.
  • The Masterpiece Cake Shop in Lakewood, Colo. is facing a boycott and picket lines after the owner declined to bake a gay couple’s wedding cake. The couple cursed out the owner before posting the incident on Facebook. The owner said he would rather shut down his business than violate his personal beliefs.
  • Impact Church, a Southern Baptist congregation in Miami, is facing eviction from a public school building because the pastor preached a sermon about marriage. The Miami-Dade County school superintendent told a local television station that the church’s opposition to homosexuality “appears to be contrary to school board policy as well as the basic principles of humanity.” The superintendent said he wanted to evict the church as a “rejection of prejudice and intolerance.

Those who preach tolerance – are the least tolerant of all. And I suspect Councilman Kenney spoke for many when he issued a not-so-subtle threat to individuals like Mr. Cathy who support traditional marriage.

“If he really, truly believes what he believes, that is his right to do so,” he said. “But there is often a price to pay for that.

In other words, Councilman Kenney wants people with dissenting views to shut up – or else face the consequences.

Pastors across the fruited plain addressed the attacks on Chick-fil-A from their pulpits on Sunday – but none was more eloquent or passionate than Charles Lyons – the pastor of Armitage Baptist Church in Chicago.

Lyons issued an appeal to Mayor Rahm Emanuel, urging him to reconsider the verbal assault he made on people of faith.

“Chick-fil-A’s values are not Chicago’s values,” Emanuel said. His remarks left many wondering if Christians were welcome in the Windy City.

“Mr. Mayor, do not dismiss us,” he implored. “Do not disrespect us. We too, are Logan Square. We too, are Chicago.”

The pastor admonished Mayor Emanuel without so much as a shout or a hint of anger. His remarks were peppered with applause and the occasional Amen. Midway through his appeal, Pastor Lyon’s paused – and delivered a not-so-subtle warning to city leaders.

“If the thought police come to Armitage Baptist Church, we will meet them at the door, respectfully, unflinchingly, willing to die on this hill holding a copy of the sacred Scriptures in one hand and a copy of the U.S. Constitution in the other,” he said.

Pay attention, people of faith.

Dark clouds are gathering. The winds of intolerance are blowing. There’s a great storm approaching.

The days of persecution are upon us.

Just because I love Jesus and have accepted him as my Lord and Savior does not mean I hate the Jews. But if they try to shut down my store because I do not want to celebrate their holidays, I get a little ticked!

The left wants to “bully” anyone who disagrees with them. This is the reason the left wants a list of Romney’s contributors, they need to start a hate/bully campaign on everyone listed. I personally would not care if they attacked me. But a business that may have to shut down, look at the number of employees that would be hurt in the process.

These are the times that Jesus warned us of in the Bible where people of faith will be persecuted. The worst that will happen, is that the government will crack down on religious so badly, they will force the closure of businesses. The only problem with that, is that people of faith won’t allow it to happen. If they want to come for us physically and kill us..I personally am Ready to stand up to Tyranny, and die for me my God, and my Freedom! God Bless America!
Now let’s see if anyone was polite enough to read this–maybe a comment? We shall see.

With all due respect I found your comment to be ridiculous. C’mon religious persecution? I am sure that Jesus was more saying, “Hey people there will come a day when people will KILL YOU for following me.” So what there are people not liking chick-fil-a because of their beliefs. How many times have Christians tried to end a businesses centered around ****-sexuality, or pornography or witchcraft. Christians in America are no better. I don’t think our leaders should out Chick-fil-a based on their beliefs, but respond by not buying their chicken sandwich. As for all us Christians, we need to do a better job of loving others in spite of their sin. That’s what Jesus did for us right? Stop following all this fear propaganda because that is all it is. The only Christian nation is the unseen kingdom that Christ calls us to follow. Not America. To be honest, most of these comments sound like you have all been convinced to believe what the media tells you to believe and not what Jesus teaches about love and relationships with others. Chick-fil-a has every right to do what it wants based on it’s beliefs, but if you want to live in a country with religious freedoms, we must remember that it goes both ways and that others are allowed to push back as well. Christians have been the bullies far too long, why are we surprised when we actually start to reap what we sow?

JayMax 84, Christians have been the bullies? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? When I see our priests and bishops afraid to say things too pro-life, or too pro-marriage for fear of upsetting too many people? That tells me that this pc crap has gone too far. I do not want my kids to have to see gays or lesbians showing PDA. Does that make me a ****-phobe? No, it means I do not feel my young children are old enough to explain things to them regarding sex. As parents,we should be allowed to tell our older children gay and lesbian actions are against our beliefs without feeling that we are going to be mercilessly attacked by those who believe it is ok. So, I do not think anyone has the right to tell me I cannot be against gay marriage. I hate the sin, not the sinner. Also, don’t tell me Christians are bullies. They make up the largest group to donate in times of disaster!

The problem is not most Democrats, but a few liberal Mayors, who supposedly represent you lefties, and decided to express themsleves very arrogantly, hypocritcally, ignorantly and foolishly against a private, family owned, succesful, American restaurant business during econimc struggle.

The Boston Mayor said, “Chick-fil-A doesn’t belong in Boston… we’re not going to have a company, Chick-fil-A or whatever the hell the name is, on our Freedom Trail… If they need licenses in the city, it will be very difficult – unless they open up their policies.”

A City of Chicago official said, “If you are discriminating against a segment of the community, I don’t want you in the First Ward”, and, “I will now be denying Chick-fil-A’s permit to open a restaurant in the 1st Ward.” The City Mayor agreed, “I don’t want you in the First Ward.”

    Amen.

MAR’RIAGE, n. [L.mas, maris.] The act of uniting a man and woman for life; wedlock; the legal union of a man and woman for life. Marriage is a contract both civil and religious, by which the parties engage to live together in mutual affection and fidelity, till death shall separate them. Marriage was instituted by God himself for the purpose of preventing the promiscuous intercourse of the sexes, for promoting domestic felicity, and for securing the maintenance and education of children.

In the 1885 Utah Territory case (Murphy v. Ramsey), the US Supreme Court recognized the fundamental importance of the traditional institution of marriage:

“For certainly no legislation can be supposed more wholesome and necessary in the founding of a free, self-governing commonwealth, fit to take rank as one of the coordinate States of the Union, than that which seeks to establish it on the basis of the idea of the family, as consisting in and springing from the union for life of one man and one woman in the holy estate of matrimony; the sure foundation of all that is stable and noble in our civilization; the best guaranty of that reverent morality which is the source of all beneficent progress in social and political improvement.”

I fail to see how Mr. Cathy’s opinion, supporting the Biblical view of marriage as being between one man and one woman, is “hateful”. The family has been firm in their beliefs. They never are open for business on Sundays.

Liberty means that we respect all opinions, whether we agree with them or not. The author stated it quite well (and I have echoed these very sentiments myself)- “Those who preach ‘tolerance’ are often the most INTOLERANT to differing viewpoints.

The best way to shut those Communists up is to take away their purse strings. No more $30K a plate dinners for Obama, we just cut off your money stream. Not just for people with faith. I’m an Atheist and if the owner of a privately owned company has the opinion that gay marriage isn’t really his thing, then that is his opinion and in a free country he has to right to voice it. I may or may not agree with it, but that’s irrelevant. He doesn’t need my approval. It shows how neither the US nor the EU are free any longer.

I’m personally extremely disgusted by how the “pink fascists” are handling such things. If you don’t like it, sue, protest, whine, harass, bully, attack… That’s how they operate. They are effectively trying to shut up different opinions and that is 100% fascist.

I have gay friends. They are just as appalled at the behavior of these people as I am. It’s even worse for my friends because those “activists” pretend to speak for them, which is utterly ridiculous when you think over it.

Not just people of faith. I listened to Glenn today and he played the footage from some school where an Atheist girl whined about a church poster and how it shouldn’t hang in the school. She had no actual argument, of course. I, as Atheist, wonder: why shouldn’t it hang there? The church in question can hang up a poster, and some Atheist like me can hang up one next to it. Isn’t that the idea of freedom of religion?

I have Christian friends too. We have our robust discussion (not Obama “robust”), sure, and yet we get along.

“If [Mr. Cathy] really, truly believes what he believes, that is his right to do so,” [Councilman Kenney] said. “But there is often a price to pay for that.”

What? Like when the Romans entertained themselves by watching lions eat Christians? Ooo – I bet that was fun! Are they thinking of reinstituting that? Or maybe burning at the stake is more their style.

“Pay attention, people of faith. Dark clouds are gathering. The winds of intolerance are blowing. There’s a great storm approaching. The days of persecution are upon us.” – - – Again.

I’m so tired of the politicizing of this Chick-fil-A thing! It’s a private business: its owners can say what they want to say and direct their PRIVATE business the way they think best. Have they refused business to anyone – THAT might be newsworthy. But I’ve never heard or read a report that they’ve refused to serve anyone based on lifestyle choices.

Last time I checked, this was a country where a person could believe as his/her conscience led. The Chick-fil-A owners SUPPORT traditional one-man-one-woman marriage. Don’t confuse that statement with “hate homosexuals,” because the two statements are not the same – no matter how loud some people yell that they are.
