Is This the Most Epic Speech Ever Given by a College Sophomore?

"Crush the shoulders of the giants upon whom we stand!"

Georgia Tech sophomore Nick Selby on Sunday delivered quite possibly the craziest and most impassioned “welcome back” pep talk in the history of ever. And if it doesn't excite or inspire you, you made need to check your pulse and make sure you're breathing.

“Georgia Tech is proud of its many traditions,” Selby said during his 2013 Freshman Convocation address, “but the one I find most exciting is our tradition of excellence.”

As he spoke, Richard Strauss’s “Also Sprach Zarathustra, Op. 30” (i.e. the “2001: A Space Odyssey” theme) played throughout the hall, growing louder and louder.

“Our mission as students is not to follow in the footsteps of the astronauts, Nobel Prize laureates, and presidents who graduated before us, but to exceed their footsteps. Crush the shoulders of the giants upon whom we stand!” he gushed.

“I am telling you!” he continued, timed perfectly to the music, “if you want to change the world, you’re at Georgia Tech. You can do that! If you want to build the Iron Man suit, you’re at Georgia Tech. You can do that.”

“If you want to play theme music during your convocation speech like a badass!” he shouted “We’re at Georgia Tech. We can do that! I am doing that.”

Selby's final words were met with thunderous applause and a standing ovation.
