Ted Cruz Reverses Course, Endorses Colleague John Cornyn

Cruz said Cornyn has earned "considerable respect in the Senate" even though "we have not agreed on everything."

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Firebrand U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz refused to endorse his colleague John Cornyn before the Texas primary. But a resounding Cornyn victory has changed Cruz's mind.

Cruz congratulated Cornyn via Facebook Wednesday, writing "John is a friend and a good man" he was proud to endorse.

A tea party darling and potential 2016 presidential candidate who's become the most-powerful force in Texas politics, Cruz said Cornyn has earned "considerable respect in the Senate" even though "we have not agreed on everything."

Fierce conservative U.S. Rep. Steve Stockman tried to unseat Cornyn during Tuesday's primary. Cruz wouldn't endorse Cornyn or even say he was voting for him.

But Stockman ran such a poor campaign that top Texas tea party groups formally disavowed him.

Cornyn easily defeated Stockman to secure the Republican nomination.
