October Surprise: Rep. Jason Chaffetz Preparing Run for House Speaker, Sources Say

Politico is calling it a "long shot."

Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah) is laying the groundwork to launch a campaign for House speaker, Politico reports, citing “multiple sources.”

In its headline, Politico calls his bid a "long shot."

Chaffetz, chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, strongly criticized House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) for connecting the Benghazi Committee investigation to Hillary Clinton’s low polling numbers, which critics argued proves political motivation behind the probe.

"I'm very supportive of Kevin McCarthy, but those statements are just absolutely inappropriate, they should be withdrawn, Mr. McCarthy should apologize. I just, I think it was absolutely wrong," Chaffetz told MSNBC on Thursday.

McCarthy is considered by many to be the favorite to replace John Boehner when he leaves Congress and his speaker post at the end of the month.

Prior to his unexpected resignation announcement, Boehner had been under intense pressure from conservatives in Congress to take bold action on issues like Planned Parenthood and Obamacare.
