Bill Clinton: The Election Is 'Kind of Scary This Year

NASHUA, NH – In his first campaign stop for Hillary Clinton in 2016 on Monday, former President Bill Clinton said that the upcoming presidential election is about “shared prosperity,” “inclusive social policy” and more inclusive politics — and that his wife is the woman for the job.

He said that “it’s kind of scary this year” because “almost everybody actually tries to do what they said they were going to do while they were running."

"They’re trying to do what they believe, so you have to take them seriously,” Clinton added of the Republican field.

He lamented that the rhetoric of the 2016 election hasn’t been more “inclusive.”

“First of all, I’m a happy grandfather, I’m not angry at anybody,” Clinton said.

Clinton said that Hillary Clinton’s platform is the best plan to put the nation on a path to “shared prosperity.” “She’s good at speaking for herself,” Clinton said. “I didn’t go over all the details of her plan, but I have reviewed it.”

Clinton also pointed out that the issue of appointing new Supreme Court justices hasn’t received enough attention during this election cycle. During the next president’s term, he noted, there’s going to be “between one and three appointments to the Supreme Court.”

He said that all of President Barack Obama’s accomplishments “will be reversed if we get a Republican Congress and a Republican president.”

The former president also touted Hillary’s work with former House Minority Whip Tom Delay (R-Texas) as an example of her ability to work with those with whom she disagrees. He called Delay “the Ted Cruz of the pre-Tea Party era,” and that no one in Congress disliked him more.

But Clinton said that since Delay was an adoptive father, he was sympathetic to Hillary Clinton’s efforts to reform the foster care system. “I think the only time he darkened the door of my administration was when I signed that bill that he and Hillary did together,” he said.

According to the Clinton campaign, approximately 700 people were in attendance.

Leading up to Clinton’s first appearance for his wife on the campaign trail, the former president’s conduct while in office, including his extramarital affairs, has become fodder for Hillary Clinton’s rivals on the campaign trail.

Hillary Clinton won the New Hampshire Democratic primary during her 2008 presidential campaign, and although she is the national Democratic front-runner, she currently trails her rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, in New Hampshire.

Hillary Clinton was not in attendance at the New Hampshire event. She campaigned in Iowa Monday.
