Chris Matthews Says GOP 'Ruined Their Evening' By Allowing Mother of Benghazi Victim to Speak

"Anybody who thinks about it for a second knows it's not true."

During the opening night of the Republican National Convention Monday, the GOP hosted the mother of one Benghazi victim. According to MSNBC host Chris Matthews, her speech "ruined their evening."

During her address at the Quickens Loans Arena in Cleveland, Pat Smith blasted the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, saying, "I blame Hillary Clinton personally for the death of my son," Sean.

"For all of this loss, for all of this grief, for all of the cynicism the tragedy in Benghazi has wrought upon America, I blame Hillary Clinton," she said. "I blame Hillary Clinton personally for the death of my son."

Matthews, unhappy with the speech, tore into Smith for voicing "this gross accusation that somehow Hillary Clinton had anything to do with the death of Chris Stevens" and the three other victims.

"I don't understand why the Republicans would choose to put this on primetime television, when they have such wonderful stories of American heroism to speak to the American people," he said. "I think it was wrong, I don't care what that woman up there — the mother — has felt. Her emotions are her own."

The MSNBC anchor said it was "wrong" of the Republican Party to host someone who would "lie" about Clinton, saying Smith's claims are "logically not true and manifestly not true."

"And anybody who thinks about it for a second knows it's not true," he added. "And I think it's wrong they ruined their evening with this."
