CNN Caught Selectively Editing the Message to Protesters From the Sister of Milwaukee Police Shooting Victim

CNN has been caught selectively editing the controversial statements of Sherelle Smith — the sister of Milwaukee police shooting victim Sylville Smith — who told protesters to take their violence "to the suburbs."

In a package that aired Monday morning, the network, after misidentifying her as Kimberly Neal, one of 23-year-old Sylville's other sisters, took portions of Smith's profanity-laced statement out of context to make it look like she was "calling for peace," Newbusters pointed out.

“Burnin down s**t ain’t going to help nothin! Y’all burnin’ down s**t we need in our community. Take that s**t to the suburbs. Burn that s**t down! We need our s**t! We need our weaves. I don’t wear it. But we need it," Smith told protesters Sunday after a night of unrest in Milwaukee.

Despite what the victim's sister actually said, though, CNN's Ana Cabrera reported that Smith was "calling for peace" — and then left out a critical part from her broadcast sound-byte.

"Don't bring the violence here and the ignorance here" was the only part of Smith's comments that were aired by CNN and the only part that was included in the online version of the story.
