Fox News commentator Charles Krauthammer says there’s “not a person in Washington” who believes President Donald Trump’s claim that former President Barack Obama wiretapped the Trump campaign during the presidential election.
Krauthammer’s comments came after Sens. Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Mark Warner (D-Va.), who are leading the Senate investigation into Russia’s potential meddling in the U.S. presidential election, said Thursday in a joint statement that they “see no indications that Trump Tower was the subject of surveillance by any element of the United States government either before or after Election Day 2016.”
Furthermore, Attorney General Jeff Sessions said this week that he never gave Trump any reason to believe the previous White House administration had wiretapped the campaign, and House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) told reporters Thursday that he’s “seen no evidence” to back up Trump’s wiretap claims.
“It makes you question the credibility of the president on anything,” Krauthammer told Fox News host Tucker Carlson of Trump’s assertion that his predecessor spied on him during the election. “He really should stop digging.”
“Look,” he continued, “there’s not a person in Washington who thinks there actually was a wiretap — that this is true.”
Krauthammer went on to say that the president “seems to have a belief in conspiracy theories,” citing the fact that, on the campaign trail, then-candidate Trump advanced a tabloid story suggesting Sen. Ted Cruz’s father (R-Texas) was in some way involved with Lee Harvey Oswald, President John F. Kennedy’s assassin.
“That’s pretty ‘Twilight Zone’ stuff,” he remarked. “This is a lot less kooky than that, but there’s no evidence.”
Krauthammer then turned the table on the Democrats, charging them with also pushing a “conspiracy theory” of their own — that there was collusion between Trump’s campaign and the Russians.
“There’s no evidence of that, either,” Krauthammer told Carlson, referring to a comment from former acting CIA Director Mike Morrell, who endorsed Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton during the election but pushed back against claims of Russian ties to Trump.
Morrell said Wednesday, “On the question of the Trump campaign conspiring with the Russians here, there is smoke, but there is no fire — at all.”
“So you have two conspiracy theories, huge investigations, the town is swept up in a frenzy on two accusations where there is no evidence,” Krauthammer said.
