South Dakota students crown teen with Down syndrome as prom queen

Classmates of a South Dakota teen with Down syndrome recently crowned her prom queen, according to Inside Edition.

Students at Douglas High School in Box Elder, South Dakota, voted senior Katie Haugh as prom queen recently after a campaign led by her classmates, her mother, Donna Haugh, told Inside Edition.

“I never expected it at all," said Donna Haugh, who is also a special education teacher's aide at Douglas High School. “It was so exciting. It was unbelievable. It was good for her, good for us.”

Donna Haugh said she was “surprised” when Katie was nominated to be prom queen alongside four of her classmates.

Branson Taylor, one of Katie’s classmates, told KOTA-TV that all the students were rooting for Katie to win.

"We made signs and people were standing at the front door handing out ballots saying ‘vote for Katie,’" Taylor said.

After a successful campaign, Katie received her crown.

“Of course, I started to cry,” Donna Haugh said. “At first, I was just happy and then the tears started coming.”

She told KOTA that Katie had recently recovered from a serious illness that had kept her out of school for six months.

“She needed this," the proud mother said.
