New Jersey poll: Chris Christie’s approval rating plummets to all-time low

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s approval rating has plummeted to an all-time low, according to a new Monmouth University poll.

A mere 15 percent of New Jersey adults approve of the Christie’s job performance as governor while 80 percent disapprove, according to the poll.

Monmouth called Christie’s approval rating an all-time low for the governor.

"It really is difficult to drive approval ratings into the single digits barring something like a criminal conviction,” Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute, said in a statement. “However, you have to admire Christie's seeming tenacity for trying to get his numbers down to that level. In reality, Christie may have found the floor for his ratings, but it's a level where most of his constituents now feel his time [in] office has hurt the state."

Christie’s approval rating dropped to 15 percent from 27 percent last year.

Both the New Jersey state Legislature and President Donald Trump have higher approval ratings than Christie in New Jersey, at 23 percent and 35 percent, respectively.

Seventy-nine percent of residents of the Garden State also said that Christie, a former Republican presidential candidate, seems more concerned about his own political future than he is about what is best for New Jersey. Just 14 percent says he puts governing New Jersey above his career.

The poll was conducted after photos of Christie sunbathing on a New Jersey state beach during a government shutdown that closed state beaches to the general public went viral online.

Eighty-six percent of those polled by Monmouth said they have seen the controversial photos of Christie on the beach with his family during the shutdown. When asked what words describe their thoughts about the photos, most respondents used negative words. Less than 10 percent offered positive or apathetic remarks about the pictures.

"This is New Jerseyans telling it like it is, but the governor has said that he basically doesn't care what they think,” Murray said. “This just confirms what most of his constituents have suspected for the past three years.”
