Chelsea Clinton tweets about 'moms in prison' — Twitter hits back hard with hilarious responses
August 06, 2017
Chelsea Clinton was widely mocked on Twitter Saturday after tweeting a link about a Girl Scouts program that helps children, whose mothers are in prison, have regular visits with their mothers.
The Time Magazine story profiles a Girl Scout troop, Troop 1500, based in Austin, Texas. On the third Saturday of each month, they take a two hour trip to a prison where many of the young girl's mothers are incarcerated.
While there, the young girls and their mothers are able to spend quality time together in a room that resembles a classroom more than it does a prison.
The program has been dubbed "Girl Scouts Beyond Bars" and it began in Maryland in 1992, according to Time. Although it's not clear how many families the program has helped over the years, Time reported that more than 150 young girls in the Lone Star State have benefited from the program, which also offers counseling to the young girls.
The Girl Scouts can remain in the program until they become 18.
The program is undoubtedly amazing and it has likely saved countless families and helped reconcile broken relationships. But people on Twitter were quick to scold Clinton for her tweet for political reasons, namely that she is the daughter of Hillary Clinton, who many believe is a criminal.
Indeed, many conservatives and Trump supporters dubbed Hillary Clinton a "criminal" during last year's presidential election over the fact that she used a private email server during her tenure as secretary of state, causing her to retain highly classified information on an unsecure network, which is a serious crime. Hillary, however, was never charged with a crime.
Then there is the alleged "pay for play" scheme surrounding the Clinton Foundation, in addition to the general sense of corruption that many believe surround Hillary and her husband, Bill Clinton, the 42nd president of the United States.
Even then-Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump threatened legal action against Hillary during a presidential debate last year, saying he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate the email scandal if he were elected president.
"So we’re going to get a special prosecutor, and we’re going to look into it,” Trump said. “Because you know what? People have been — their lives have been destroyed for doing one fifth of what you’ve done. And it’s a disgrace. And honestly, you ought to be ashamed of yourself."
Needless to say, people were quick to torch Chelsea over the irony:
I'm sure Hillary will be glad to see you when go visit her there.
