GOP Sen. Jeff Flake says he's not worried about Trump's recent attacks on him

Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake told reporters Monday morning that he is unfazed by President Donald Trump's recent public attacks on his 2018 re-election campaign.

“I don’t worry about it at all," Flake said Monday morning after a Chamber of Commerce breakfast in his home state, according to The Hill.

Trump took aim at Flake last week on Twitter, calling the senator "toxic" and voicing support for Flake's primary challenger, Dr. Kelli Ward.

"Great to see that Dr. Kelli Ward is running against Flake Jeff Flake, who is WEAK on borders, crime and a non-factor in Senate. He's toxic," Trump tweeted last Thursday.

Trump's backlash came after Flake, one of Trump's most outspoken Republican critics, released a book at the beginning of August titled, "Conscience of a Conservative: A Rejection of Destructive Politics and a Return to Principle."

Throughout the book, Flake is openly critical of his own party for abandoning its principles and allowing Trump's ascent to the highest office in the land.

Other things to think about

Flake said he's focused on running his campaign and not worried about what the president might do to influence the primary election in 2018.

"That’s not my realm. That’s somebody else’s. ... I’m running my own campaign. It’s going well," Flake said. "And what the president does, that’s his prerogative."

Late last week, the White House announced a rally stop in Phoenix for Trump on Tuesday, where there is speculation Trump is planning on endorsing a third potential challenger in the midterm race, Arizona Treasurer Jeff DeWit. DeWit served as Arizona chairman of Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, and reports say he has been strongly contemplating a run.
