VP Mike Pence says he believes in 'more monuments, not fewer' in the US

Vice President Mike Pence addressed the frenzy of Confederate monument removal and destruction during Tuesday morning's "Fox & Friends" on Fox News and said that he believed more monuments — not fewer — will form a stronger, more cohesive United States of America.

"I can't help but think that rather than ... tearing down monuments that have graced our cities all across this country for years, we ought to be building more monuments," Pence told Fox host Ainsley Earhardt.

His solution?

Pence said he believes that any offending monuments should be addressed on a local level, without interference from the federal government.

The vice president noted that the onslaught of monument vandalism that has ramped up since the violent protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, has to be quashed, calling the act of defacing the memorials "unacceptable."

Pence said that while history must be remembered, he believes it is important to "celebrate the progress we've made since that history — celebrate the men and women who have helped the nation move toward a more perfect union."

Opposing viewpoints

House minority leader Nancy Pelosi fully believes that Confederate monuments should be removed — including those in the halls of the U.S. Capitol.

“The Confederate statues in the halls of Congress have always been reprehensible,” Pelosi said. “If Republicans are serious about rejecting white supremacy, I call upon Speaker [Paul] Ryan to join Democrats to remove the Confederate statues from the Capitol immediately.”

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) went as far as to state that he had plans to introduce a bill to remove Confederate monuments from the Capitol and assured his constituents that there was more to come.

"I will be introducing a bill to remove Confederate statues from the US Capitol building," Booker wrote on Twitter. "This is just one step. We have much work to do."
