Bernie Sanders responds to Hillary Clinton's slams, explains exactly 'What Happened' to her campaign

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) hit back at newly released claims from Hillary Clinton's forthcoming book that accuse the socialist former presidential candidate of doing "lasting damage" to Clinton's campaign for the presidency.

Sanders appeared Thursday night on CBS'  "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert," where he refuted Clinton's claims and added a few comments of his own.

Clinton's accusations

Clinton's latest book, "What Happened," pointed some fingers at Sanders and indicated that Sanders was at least partially responsible for the election of President Donald Trump.

She also said that because she and Sanders agreed on many key issues during the race, he resorted to "innuendo and impugning my character."

In the newly released book excerpt, Clinton wrote, "[Sanders'] attacks caused lasting damage, making it harder to unify progressives in the general election and paving the way for Trump’s ‘Crooked Hillary’ campaign."

"He didn’t get into the race to make sure a Democrat won the White House," she added. "He got in to disrupt the Democratic Party."

Sanders' rebuttal

Sanders was having none of Clinton's remarks and was taking no responsibility for helping torpedo her campaign.

When Colbert asked Sanders to comment on the claims in Clinton's book, the senator initially balked, but finally offered up a response to her accusations.

"Look, Secretary Clinton ran against the most unpopular candidate in the history of this country, and she lost, and she was upset about it, and I understand that," he said, "but our job now is really not to go backward. It is to go forward."

Reaffirming that it's pointless to rehash election history, Sanders said that there are "enormous" issues that the U.S. needs to address and that living in the past isn't helping.

"[We need to] create the nation that we know we can be come. We have enormous problems facing us," he said. "I think it’s a little bit silly to keep talking about 2016. We've got too many problems."

Naming a few of those problems, Sanders pointed to DACA, climate change, minimum wage, and health care.

"Those are the issues that we've got to be focusing on," Sanders said.
