On his 66th birthday, a colorblind bodybuilder received quite a gift from his family — one that allowed him to see color for the first time.
In a viral video uploaded to YouTube, William Reed’s family wrote that he “lived his whole life in [black] and white," so for his birthday, they decided “to pitch in together” to buy him a pair of Enchroma glasses, which have corrective lenses that help the colorblind see color.
The family filmed Reed's reaction to seeing color for the first time in a video that has since gone viral.
In the video, Reed opens the gift and asks, “What is this?”
A family member encourages him to put the glasses on, telling him they are “sunglasses.”
A life-changing gift
After Reed puts the glasses on, he appears taken aback and delighted as he takes in his surroundings.
“Can you see with our eyes now?” someone asks, pointing out colorful objects around Reed such as balloons and flowers.
Reed became emotional as he looked around.
“I never saw those before,” he said through tears, joking that his surroundings no longer “look like mud."
"This looks so weird," he said, adding that nearby trees "don't even look real.”
"Seriously, they look 3D," he said.
He then compared himself to Dorothy from "The Wizard of Oz."
"It is like 'The Wizard of Oz,' isn't it?" a family member said. "Definitely like 'The Wizard of Oz.' You go black and white and then all of a sudden you see color. We're not in Kansas anymore, baby."
