Oklahoma church group rescues baby abandoned on the side of a highway

An Ada, Oklahoma, church group recently rescued a baby after discovering him abandoned on the side of a highway, KOCO-TV reported.

The discovery

A woman who wished to remain anonymous told KOCO that while she and her church group were traveling home in a van on Interstate 40, they saw a car seat outside in the sweltering heat.

“My youth pastor goes, ‘Oh my God, did you all see that?’” the woman told KOCO.

She said he then pulled over and left the van, hoping that the occupant of the car seat was a doll. But inside the car seat, he discovered "two little feet" kicking.

“He walks behind the van and he grabs a car seat with a baby in it," she said.

KOCO also reported that the baby boy, just a few months old, was wearing a baseball onesie. Police said several items — including a pacifier, a social security card, a birth certificate, and $5,555 in cash — were also found with the child inside the car seat. There was no note left with him.

Threat of heat

Police said it was about 90 degrees outside when the baby was discovered. The police said he was showing no signs of distress in the heat when they arrived, which meant he couldn’t have been outside for more than about half an hour.

“I couldn't believe people were that evil,” the woman said. “It was 90 degrees outside."

Baby is safe

The church group called the police, who took the baby to a hospital for an examination. Police said the baby boy was healthy and has been placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.

KOCO posted an update to the story on their Facebook page, writing that Oklahoma City police found the baby's mother. She was also taken to the hospital for an evaluation. The baby remains in the care of Child Protective Services.
