Watch: Paul Ryan's emotional reaction to Steve Scalise’s return to Capitol Hill

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) returned to Capitol Hill on Thursday, months after he was shot in the hip when a gunman opened fire at an Alexandria, Virginia, baseball field where Republican lawmakers were practicing for the Congressional Baseball Game.

An emotional reunion

On Friday, CBS News posted a video of Scalise’s reunion with House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

Ryan appeared overcome by emotion as he saw Scalise and walked across the room to embrace him.

"This is just great,” Ryan said through tears. He then likened himself to former House Speaker John Boehner for crying.

"We cried a lot of tears in the hospital in those first few days," Scalise said.

The two lawmakers then discussed Scalise’s time in the hospital. Ryan was shocked to discover Scalise remembered his first visit after the attack.

Scalise’s wife, Jennifer, joked that she gave her husband “a hard time” because he opened his eyes for Ryan’s visit, but not when she got there.

Asked how it feels to have Scalise back at the Capitol, Ryan said, "I don't have words for it. I can't describe it."

"I've never felt this kind of emotion before,” Ryan said, adding that Scalise’s return will be “healing” for people to see that their prayers were answered.

“Everywhere we all go, everyone's been sending their prayers, and it's working," Ryan said.

"They're being answered. I feel it," Scalise said. "I mean, we have felt these prayers … all around the country people that we don't even know. And wow, the power of prayer is — is real."

Scalise’s return to House floor

Scalise returned to the House floor on Thursday and was greeted by his colleagues with a standing ovation.

“I’m definitely a living example that miracles really do happen,” he said as he thanked those who played a role in his survival.

'Humpty Dumpty' is back

In a preview of a “60 Minutes” interview scheduled to air Sunday, Scalise likened himself to “Humpty Dumpty,” following the shooting, telling CBS’ Norah O’Donnell that his doctors had to “put me back together again.”

Scalise has been in the hospital since the June attack.

The interview — Scalise’s first since the attack— is scheduled to air Sunday.
