Powerful video shows Las Vegas crowd singing 'God Bless America' just an hour before shots rang out
October 03, 2017
About one hour before a gunman opened fire on a crowd gathered for a Las Vegas country music festival, country stars Big & Rich led the crowd in a particularly poignant rendition of "God Bless America."
What happened?
Concertgoers can be seen in the video, which was taken from the vantage point of the main stage, gathered around and singing along with the band while holding up lighters and cellphones to illuminate the crowd.
The band, at one point, can be heard encouraging the crowd to participate in the vocal display of patriotism.
"Come on, Vegas, sing!" the band said.
The band dedicated the song to servicemen and women in the U.S.
"I think we all know that without men and women who are willing to fight for our freedoms in this country, we don’t get to assemble like this and have crazy country music concerts in the middle of Las Vegas, Nevada. It would not happen," John Rich said.
"We are lucky, Big Kenny, that this morning, when our eyes awakened, we found ourselves under the red, white, and blue of the United States," he added.
Big & Rich shared the video on their Twitter page Tuesday with the caption, "This is a POWERFUL moment of American unity. It's time to unify. We love the fans and are heartbroken #prayforvegas."
It is unknown how many in that section of the crowd were struck by the gunman's fire, which killed at least 59 people and injured over 500 concertgoers.
