Prototypes for Trump's border wall are finally being built - here's what they look like

U.S. Customs and Border Protection released video showing the prototypes for the border wall being built even as negotiations for the funding of the border wall appear to have stalled.

How long has this construction been underway?

Construction of the prototypes began on September 26th near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry in San Diego, according to CBP.

There are eight prototypes that range from 18 feet to 30 feet high. They are "designed to deter illegal crossings," says the Border Protection office. They are expected to cost $3.6 million.

Four of the prototypes are made of concrete, while the other four are made of other materials.

They are expected to be completely constructed in 30 days.

How is funding for the wall being negotiated?

President Trump demanded that Democrats help fund the border wall in exchange for passing some DACA amnesty for illegals, but Democrats balked at the idea and killed the deal. There are some reports and rumors that even Republican members of Congress are privately scoffing at the idea of a border wall.

Has Trump backed down on making Mexico pay for the wall?

Not in the least. Whenever he's asked by the press, he confidently proclaims that Mexico will pay for the wall. A leaked report of a phone call between the president and the president of Mexico revealed that Trump asked the leader to stop saying in the press that he would never fund the wall.

How much will the border wall cost?

As a final design has not been chosen yet, it's unclear what the final cost will be, but estimates range from the upper end of $70 billion from a report by Senate Democrats, to $21.6 billion estimated by a report from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
